Role Type
Contract • Full-time • Architect / Technical Lead
Sydney, NSW
Description
Software@Scale is partnering with a large enterprise client on a major VMware Cloud Foundation migration, automation and private cloud uplift program.
We are seeking a VMware Cloud Foundation Architect / Technical Lead to help shape the architecture, planning and delivery of a large-scale VCF transformation. This role is suited to someone who can operate above the tools — setting direction, defining target-state designs, guiding technical streams, and working with senior stakeholders — while still being hands-on enough to understand the detail.
The program will focus on uplifting the client’s VMware Cloud Foundation environment, with a strong emphasis on architecture readiness, automation, Infrastructure as Code, operations, visibility, multi-tenancy and networking.
This is not a pure delivery engineering role. We are looking for someone who can lead architecture, challenge assumptions, guide senior engineers and help drive the program from current-state assessment through to future-state design and delivery readiness.
Position Overview
This is a senior technical leadership role focused on the architecture, design and delivery readiness of a complex VMware Cloud Foundation private cloud environment.
You will help the client understand the delta between current and target VCF platform versions, assess readiness for future-state platform operations, and shape the architecture required to support automation, provisioning, service catalogue, multi-tenancy, networking and operational visibility.
The role will work across multiple streams, including:
-
Architecture and design
-
Planning and migration readiness
-
Automation and service catalogue uplift
-
Infrastructure as Code
-
VCF private cloud operations
You will be expected to lead technical conversations, define practical architecture outcomes, support delivery planning, and provide direction to engineering teams working across VCF, VMware automation, platform operations and IaC.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead architecture and design activities for a VMware Cloud Foundation platform uplift and migration program.
-
Assess current-state VCF environments and define the delta to future-state platform versions, including VCF 9.x platform readiness.
-
Shape target-state architecture across VCF private cloud, workload domains, lifecycle management, networking, operations and platform governance.
-
Provide technical leadership across architecture, planning, automation, Infrastructure as Code and operations streams.
-
Define design patterns for provisioning, service catalogue, Day 0–2 automation, lifecycle operations and platform reliability.
-
Guide the uplift of VMware automation capabilities across Aria Automation / vRealize Automation, Aria Orchestrator / vRO and related tooling.
-
Support the design of reusable, governed and scalable automation workflows for VM provisioning, deprovisioning, validation and operational lifecycle management.
-
Shape Infrastructure as Code approaches for VMware / VCF environments, including governance, reusability and operational maintainability.
-
Provide architecture guidance for VCF private cloud operations, including visibility, multi-tenancy, networking, platform controls and operational handover.
-
Work closely with enterprise architects, platform engineers, infrastructure teams, operations teams and senior stakeholders.
-
Translate business, operational and platform requirements into clear architecture, design and delivery artefacts.
-
Review and challenge engineering designs to ensure they are scalable, supportable and aligned to enterprise standards.
-
Produce high-quality architecture documentation, solution designs, migration plans, decision records and technical roadmaps.
-
Mentor and guide senior engineers across platform, automation and operations workstreams.
Skills & Experience
-
Strong architecture or technical leadership experience across VMware, VCF or large-scale private cloud environments.
-
Deep understanding of VMware Cloud Foundation, including architecture, workload domains, lifecycle management, platform operations and upgrade / migration considerations.
-
Experience designing or leading VCF platform uplift, migration, readiness or modernisation programs.
-
Strong VMware platform knowledge across vSphere, vCenter, NSX, vSAN and enterprise virtual infrastructure operations.
-
Experience with VCF private cloud operating models, including multi-tenancy, networking, governance, operational visibility and lifecycle controls.
-
Strong experience with VMware automation tooling such as VMware Aria Automation / vRealize Automation and Aria Orchestrator / vRO.
-
Experience designing automation patterns for provisioning, service catalogues, Day 0–2 operations, validation workflows and decommissioning.
-
Understanding of Infrastructure as Code principles and how they apply to VMware, VCF or private cloud environments.
-
Ability to lead technical planning across multiple workstreams and bring structure to complex enterprise programs.
-
Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence enterprise architecture, engineering, operations and delivery teams.
-
Strong documentation skills, including architecture designs, decision papers, migration plans, runbooks and technical roadmaps.
-
Comfortable operating in large enterprise, government, banking or regulated environments with formal governance and change control.
Certifications
Highly regarded:
-
Current or recent VMware / Broadcom VCF certification.
-
VMware certifications such as VCP, VCAP or equivalent VMware Cloud Foundation credentials.
-
Certifications aligned to VMware Cloud Foundation architecture, deployment, administration, operations, automation or networking.
-
Equivalent hands-on architecture and delivery experience across VCF, vSphere, NSX, vSAN, Aria Suite or private cloud environments will also be considered.
Nice to Have
-
Experience with VCF 9.x or recent VMware Cloud Foundation platform versions.
-
Experience assessing version deltas, upgrade readiness or migration paths across VCF environments.
-
Experience with VCF 9.0, 9.1 or 9.2 migration, readiness or uplift planning.
-
Experience with VMware private cloud operating models.
-
Experience with PowerCLI, PowerShell, Terraform, Ansible or similar automation / IaC tooling.
-
Experience integrating platform automation with CMDB, IPAM, monitoring, backup, security or ITSM tooling.
-
Experience with SolarWinds IPAM or similar IP address management platforms.
-
Experience leading technical streams or squads across platform engineering, automation or infrastructure programs.
-
Experience in banking, government, defence, telecommunications or other highly controlled enterprise environments.

Lead design conversations
-
Own architecture decisions
-
Guide senior engineers
-
Shape migration and uplift plans
