AI Automation Engineer
As pay.com.au has scaled, everyday processes that were once easy to manage have become work worth refining, optimising and automating — creating an organisation-wide opportunity to lift capability across every team. This is a build-first role: you’ll sit with teams across sales, marketing, operations, product and technology, dig into how they really work, and ship automations that hold up in production and actually get used. AI is one tool among several, deployed deliberately where it earns its place — not by default.
Responsibilities
- Run discovery with non-technical stakeholders, elicit, question, push back, and reframe vague asks into well-scoped problems.
- Design first, solution second, then build the automations and workflows — picking the right tool for the scale of the problem, whether that’s code, n8n, agent SDKs, a vendor product, or a well-configured off-the-shelf AI tool.
- Ship with production discipline: human-in-the-loop where needed, secrets and PII handled properly, and failures that are observable and recoverable.
- Package what you build into shareable workflows others can pick up and run, and support the team’s AI enablement efforts, including setting up connectors and MCPs.
- Instrument usage and iterate on what you’ve shipped until it sticks.
- Support the product team on AI initiatives.
About You
- You’ve spent real time on automation projects across a range of contexts, and you can tell where AI genuinely helps and where conventional software is the better call.
- Strong coding fundamentals — comfortable writing and maintaining production code (e.g. Python or TypeScript), working with APIs, and orchestrating with tools like n8n and agent SDKs.
- Fluency with mainstream AI tools (Claude, Cowork, connectors, MCPs) and the judgment to know when they’re enough and when they’re not plus secure, thorough engineering habits around test harnesses, telemetry, logging and sensitive data.
- Genuine curiosity about a fast-moving AI ecosystem and a habit of experimenting with new tools and models on your own initiative.
- The confidence to question existing workflows even when the ask comes from someone senior — and the comfort to work independently in a lean environment, owning and maintaining what you ship.
We know not everyone will meet every requirement, and that’s okay. If you’re excited about the role and believe you can make an impact, we’re keen to hear from you.
