The North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS) is a not-for-profit organisation delivering holistic legal and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence. With offices across the Top End, our work is
grounded in cultural respect, community collaboration, and self-determination.
About the Opportunity
We have opportunities available in Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy. Solicitors provide culturally appropriate legal assistance primarily in Family Law, Family Violence and Child Protection matters, while working closely with Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide culturally safe and trauma-informed legal advice and representation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- Keep accurate client files and enter data promptly using NAAFLS systems.
- Help deliver community legal education on family violence and related topics.
- Support improvements to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery.
- Prepare clear reports, submissions and presentations for community forums.
- Travel to remote communities as part of outreach and client support.
Selection Criteria
- Hold or be eligible for an unrestricted practising certificate in the NT.
- A minimum of 2 years post-admission experience in a relevant legal role.
- Experience providing culturally sensitive legal services to Indigenous clients,
especially victims of family violence in remote communities.
- Strong written and verbal communication, negotiation and confidentiality skills.
- Sound knowledge of Family Law, domestic violence, child protection and related areas.
- Strong attention to detail; confident using electronic records and data systems.
- Collaborative team player in a cross-cultural workplace.
- Willing to travel overnight to remote communities (up to two trips of 2–4 days per month).
- Able to obtain a Working with Children Clearance (WWCC) and clear Criminal History Check.
- You will also need a current ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence
