About the role:

The Registered Nurse, Child Health is responsible for working with clinical teams to improve the standard of health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly children and families, through the provision of culturally valid, holistic primary health care services.

The focus on this position is to improve health outcomes for children through the provision of a comprehensive and high-quality approach to the continuity of care, effective screening, assessment and follow-up services.

The position of Registered Nurse, Child Health reports to the Practice Manager and is supervised by the Coordinator, Health Services (Women and Children’s Maternal Health) for daily work activities in the clinic. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

The Registered Nurse, Child Health works closely with all managers and clinical staff in the implementation of accreditation standards and ensure quality services and effective outcomes for clients.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work with Health Workers and Medical Officers in a multi- disciplinary team approach to provide safe, culturally sensitive and coordinated comprehensive primary health care for newborns, young babies and children and provide health advice to parents, carers and families enabling them to make informed decisions.
  • Provide initial screening and health checks for children with a specific focus on developmental screening of infants and babies (0- to 5-year-old) and report significant child health related issues to the Medical Officer.
  • Provide advice to parents and carers on behavior, growth and developmental stages and issues, common childhood illnesses and breastfeeding guidelines.
  • Work in collaboration with Health Workers to facilitate and deliver coordinated care, incorporating education and support with appropriate recall and follow up and home visits. Provide support across services particularly for those children considered to be “at risk” using culturally suitable health promotion material.
  • Facilitate and implement immunisation clinics, incorporating support and education about vaccinating against preventable diseases and ensuring a recall and follow-up system is in place.
  • In collaboration with the Coordinator, Health Services provide day to day general nursing care and support the clinical activities of Medical Officers, Health Workers, Registered and Enrolled Nurses. This may include triaging, emergency management, screening and health checks diagnostic procedures, administration of medication and dressings of general clients presenting to the clinic.
  • Comply with legislation, policies, procedures and protocols to achieve and maintain evidence based safe and effective practice in primary health care, with a focus on promotion, prevention and early identification.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with external child health services to provide and support ongoing child health care, particularly with specialist child health services.
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance of quality assurance systems in accordance with Accreditation standards and internal and external protocols.
  • Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work within Wuchopperen’s Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.

  • For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of child health nursing supported by both extensive experience and utilisation of specific postgraduate studies to develop, deliver and evaluate child health and immunisation programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Demonstrated and comprehensive experience and ability to perform clinical screening, child health assessments, education and administrative duties within the Child and Maternal Health program, specifically with respect to children and their families. Together with an understanding of the concept of community controlled primary health care.
  • Ability to provide a high level of holistic health care to clients that may include children and families, within the scope of practice of a generalist registered nurse, child health nurse.
  • Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability liaise with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

Qualifications and experience:

  • The Registered Nurse, Child Health must hold current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse Division 1, a post graduate qualification in child health or working towards and an Immunisation Endorsement (Queensland).
  • It is a condition of employment in this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough) and hepatitis B.
  • Vaccination against Covid-19 is highly recommended.
  • Proof of qualifications and current registration is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • The Registered Nurse role is a Specified position. Applicants for a specified position must provide one written reference from an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander referee to support their ability to meet selection criteria 2 above.
  • Possession of a current Queensland “C” class driver’s licence is essential.
  • Commitment to work within the principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community control including a willingness to develop the leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
  • Ability to use Microsoft products and the ability to use or willingness to gain proficiency in the client information management systems.

Requirements:

  • Hold a current Blue Card (for suitability to work with children and young people).
  • Proof of qualifications is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • Possess a current driver’s licence.
  • A commitment to adhere to Wuchopperen’s policies and procedures.
