For over 40 years Women’s Legal Service Victoria (Women’s Legal) has championed women’s rights to live free from violence. We are a dedicated team with a passion for working with women and non-binary people to live free from violence and discrimination by:
- Providing high quality integrated legal services for Victorian women and non-binary people who are victim-survivors of family violence and disadvantaged or marginalised by structural and systemic barriers.

About the Role
As an Intake and Assessment Worker, you will be the first point of contact for women and non-binary people seeking legal support, playing a critical role in ensuring they receive timely, compassionate, culturally sensitive and high-quality assistance. Working within a multidisciplinary legal service, you will conduct intake assessments against our eligibility criteria, triage matters, and books client appointments. Where help seekers are not eligible for our service, you will provide accurate legal information and facilitate referrals to legal and support services. This is a dynamic role where your ability to balance client care, sound judgement, and administrative precision will directly contribute to improving access to justice and safety outcomes for women and non-binary people. Key responsibilities include:
- Manage incoming client enquiries via phone, email, and in person, delivering responsive and client-centred support
- Conduct comprehensive intake assessments to identify legal issues, provide information about the service offerings, determine eligibility, assess risk, and escalate high risk situations as required
- Triage matters and complete intake and bookings for legal advice appointments, ensuring timely access to services
- Provide clear information and facilitate referrals to appropriate legal, community, and support services where clients are ineligible or require additional assistance
- Maintain accurate and confidential client files and records, including data entry, case management updates, appointment scheduling and booking interpreters for appointments and calls as required
- Process referrals for our duty lawyer services and other services
- Support the legal team through paralegal tasks such as legal and non-legal research, drafting documents, court documentation preparation, drafting applications for grants of legal aid, and delivery of written information for potential inclusion in briefs and other legal documents
- Collaborate closely with lawyers assisting with the conduct of cases, other paralegals, and support staff to ensure seamless and integrated service delivery]
- Contribute to data collection for reporting and evaluation, and continuous improvement initiatives, while upholding organisational values and trauma-informed practice
About You
You are a highly organised and empathetic professional with a strong commitment to social justice and supporting people experiencing disadvantage or vulnerability. You bring sound judgement and the ability to navigate sensitive situations with care, professionalism, and cultural awareness. Thriving in a fast-paced environment, you are adept at balancing competing priorities while maintaining attention to detail and delivering high-quality outcomes.
Key requirements include:
- Experience gathering and assessing sensitive client information to make sound judgements about eligibility, risk, or support needs, preferably in a legal or community services setting
- Strong understanding and practical application of trauma informed and culturally safe practices, including the ability to identify and respond to high risk issues such as safety and suicide
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with clients from diverse backgrounds, including culturally diverse communities and people experiencing disadvantage or vulnerability
- High level oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients, colleagues, and external stakeholders
- Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise work, manage multiple tasks, and maintain high quality outcomes in a fast paced environment
- Proficiency in client management systems, document management, and the Microsoft Office Suite, with strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong research and problem solving skills, with a solution focused and resourceful approach
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in a changing environment, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
Desirable:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in law, social work, criminology, community services, or a related field
- Experience working in a community legal centre or similar multidisciplinary setting
- Commitment to social justice principles and the empowerment of women and non-binary people.
