Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) provides high quality legal and social support services to women, specialising in the areas of family law, domestic violence, child protection, financial abuse legal protection, and sexual assault through our counselling notes protect program. The Helpline is a self-referral pathway for women who need legal assistance, referral options, and access to legal information. The Helpline and Intake role will primarily answer the Helpline and undertake a needs analysis of women to determine which legal information, referral, or service they should be directed, including the booking of internal legal appointments subject to capacity and eligibility.
The work performed by WLSQ involves providing legal and social support services to women and their children impacted by Domestic and Family Violence and / or Sexual Violence. All staff employed by WLSQ (including this role) will be privy to or will take part in conversations with people who have experienced traumatic situations, and it is likely some of our clients may still be experiencing the effects of trauma.
This role is part-time 2 to 4 days per week. Part days within school hours can also be considered. It is located in our Ipswich office.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Answer calls on the Helpline and assess callers’ needs:
- Communicate with women have experienced, or are currently experiencing domestic and family violence, including women with intersecting vulnerabilities, such as disability,
culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and Aboriginal and/or Torres
Strait Islander backgrounds.
- Respond to all callers in a trauma-informed, culturally- safe manner.
- Undertake service eligibility checks and commence intake processes.
- Assess the risk, needs and urgency of caller’s concerns and triage accordingly.
B. Provide information and referrals to women who call the Helpline:
- Provide callers with relevant resources, including legal and non-legal, that have been
approved by WLSQ.
- Provide appropriate referrals to both internal and external supports.
C. Support the provision of legal services to WLSQ clients:
- Provide administration and reception support as required.
- Attend to clients who attend the office without an appointment and manage the intake process with them in person.
- Action warm referrals received by external support agencies and sector stakeholders.
- Collect and enter intake data in relevant forms and systems.
- Book WLSQ legal advice appointments.
- Help clients prepare for their appointments by explaining process and answering questions.
- Conduct the client conflict check.
D. Adhere to the vision and values of WLSQ:

- Perform any other reasonable duties as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA / SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- High level computer literacy and competency using Microsoft Office Suite and Client Management Systems.
- Experience in communicating with vulnerable women from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and trauma awareness.
- Delivers high quality work within expected timeframes
- Able to adjust plans and priorities in response to changes in workload or urgent needs.
- Establishes, builds and sustains effective and respectful relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Communicates effectively with clients to support their needs and concerns, and shares appropriate information with relevant stakeholders.
- Makes appropriate referrals for clients and families/carers.
- Provides clear information about legal processes and client options, following routine
practices as directed, or the ability to obtain the knowledge.
- Demonstrates self-awareness and a desire to learn and grow professionally.
- Commitment to and ability to work within a feminist framework and to work independently and as a member of a team.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
This role requires the incumbent to have a clear National Police Check and to obtain a blue card.
