Description

Outreach Support Officer (Community & Student Support)

The Community College by WEA Co (RTO 90297)

Some people just need the right person to back them at the right time.

This role is about being that person.

At WEA Co, we work toward connected and thriving communities of lifelong learners. Within The Community College, that means supporting people to access education and training in a way that works for them, particularly those who may not otherwise see themselves in it.

The Outreach Support Officer plays a key role in this work, connecting with community, building pathways into learning, and supporting people to stay engaged once they take that first step.

This is not a traditional admin role, and it’s not a teaching role. It sits between community, education and support, and is suited to someone who knows how to build trust, follow through, and work alongside people as they navigate their next step.

About the role

The Outreach Support Officer leads and coordinates outreach, community engagement, and learner support activities to improve access to, and outcomes in, education and training.

The role operates across two connected areas:

  • engaging new learners through community partnerships and outreach
  • supporting current learners to enter, remain in, and progress through education and training

You will work closely with Program Specialists, trainers, and team members to ensure learners are supported from first connection through to participation and progression.

This role contributes directly to increasing participation, retention and progression outcomes, particularly for individuals and communities who may face barriers to participation, in line with the intent of the National Skills Agreement (NSA) Outreach Support Program.

What this looks like in practice

In a typical week, you might:

  • connect with someone who is unsure if education is right for them and support them to take that first step
  • follow up with a learner who has disengaged and work with them to re-enter when they are ready
  • work alongside Program Specialists to ensure learners are supported end to end
  • build and maintain relationships with community organisations to create referral pathways into programs
  • represent WEA Co at local events, interagency meetings, and community engagement activities across the Illawarra
  • identify barriers to participation and respond through practical support, coordination, and referral

Who this role is for

This role may suit you if you have experience in:

  • youth work or community services
  • disability or mental health support
  • employment services or case work
  • education support or learner services

You may not have worked in an RTO or education setting before, and that’s okay.

What matters is how you work with people.

We are looking for someone who:

  • builds genuine, trusted relationships with a diverse range of people
  • understands that engagement takes time, consistency and follow through
  • can identify barriers and respond in a practical, supportive and respectful way
  • is comfortable working autonomously while staying connected to a team
  • brings a trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach to their work
  • can work across community, learners, and internal teams to support outcomes

Company Overview

WEA Co is a not-for-profit helping people of all ages
access learning, build skills, and connect. In 1913, education was out of reach for many working adults in the Illawarra. WEA Co began to change that, offering workers’ education classes that built knowledge, skills, and a sense of possibility. It was the start of our mission to make learning accessible to everyone, no matter their circumstances. As our community changed, so did the needs of adult learners. Many people sought skills to adapt to new industries, grow in their careers, or connect socially. The Community College evolved to meet those needs, providing affordable, inclusive courses in workplace skills, digital literacy, and creative learning. For decades, it has been a place where adults can gain confidence, independence, and a stronger connection to their community. Some young people in our region find that mainstream schooling does not work for them, often because of life circumstances beyond their control. Novo Education was created to give these students in Years 9–12 a safe, understanding place to re-engage with learning. Small classes, one-on-one mentoring, and a trauma-informed approach help them rebuild confidence, set goals, and take steps toward a future they can see for themselves.
