Primary Program Objective: 

The primary objective of the Family Preservation Program is to keep children safe at home with their families, and prevent removal, placement in out of home care, and future contact with the child protection system. Family preservation also supports children and families to achieve wider social benefits, including better education attainment and improved health and wellbeing outcomes.  

 

‘’Families Together” is a framework within this program. It is voluntary and aims to build on a family’s strengths and capabilities to respond to their children’s needs and to create a safe and nurturing home. At Veritas House, we deliver a range of supports within this framework to promote parenting skills, family functioning, child development, as well as practical support to help create a safe home environment. 

  

Primary Objective of the Position 

The Senior Practitioner provides advanced practice support within the families together team, directly supervising case workers and family workers to strengthen service quality and support improved outcomes for the children and families we are supporting.  

The role combines direct casework (with a small case load) with practice leadership, supporting staff to navigate challenging cases, build engagement, and deliver effective, responsive interventions. 

 

 

About the role 

This role is a full time Permenant position based from either our Bathurst or Orange office, with regular travel between offices as required. 

Some of your core responsibilities will include; 

  • Lead advanced casework for a small caseload of complex families, delivering high-quality assessments, case planning, and targeted interventions to improve safety and stability. 
  • Provide practice leadership, supervision, and coaching to caseworkers, building capability and supporting high-quality, consistent service delivery.
  • Guide staff in managing complex cases, including risk assessment, engagement challenges, and competing priorities. 
  • Drive service quality by reviewing case plans, documentation, and practice approaches to ensure alignment with program standards and outcomes. 
  • Support collaboration with external services and stakeholders, strengthening coordinated responses and improving access to supports for families. 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement through identifying practice gaps, supporting implementation of tools, and enhancing outcome measurement.  
  • Maintain high-quality reporting and documentation, contributing to case reviews, team learning, and organisational accountability.

Selection Criteria 

Essential Criteria:  

  1. Minimum of a Diploma in Community Services or similar.  
  2. Demonstrate your sound knowledge of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1988 (NSW) and Mandatory reporting obligations; 
  3. At least 2 years’ experience in a Child and Family Services role, with experience in completing comphensive assessments and your approach to gathering and analysing information, and the outcomes achieved. 
  4. Strong understanding of trauma and its impact on the development and behaviour of children and young people, with the ability to support teams through complex and sensitive cases. 
  5.  Proven ability to assess, manage and respond to risk and complexity in child and family work, balancing child safety, family engagement, organisational accountability along with holding a complex case load.  
  6. Highly developed written, verbal, and communication skills including experience using case management systems, data reporting tools, and the ability to analyse and utilise data to inform practice and service delivery.  

 

Desirable 

  • Experience in a senior or specialist practice role. 
  • Experience working across diverse communities and service systems.
