Helpdesk Technician
Employment type: Part Time (0.6-0.8 EFT) or Full Time

Reports to: Director of Information Technology
We are seeking an experienced helpdesk technician in our supportive and community-focused
workplace. To succeed in this role, you thrive on problem-solving and quickly adapt to learning new systems and processes. The position plays a vital role in ensuring smooth IT operations by providing technical support and troubleshooting services for hardware, software, and network-related issues.
About The Cairnmillar Institute:
The Cairnmillar Institute is a not-for-profit provider of psychological services and higher education, with a 65-year history of supporting mental health and training the next generation of practitioners. We offer clinics, short courses, vocational training and accredited postgraduate programs in psychology, counselling and psychotherapy.
About the role
The Helpdesk Technician provides essential support to staff, students, and other IT account
holders by addressing IT issues and problems. This role also includes administrative support for the IT team, contributing to the overall functionality and efficiency of IT services.
The successful candidate will have:
- Tertiary qualification inInformation Technology or a related discipline (or equivalent experience), with a minimum of two years in a helpdesk, IT support, or desktop support
role.
- Demonstrated experience administering Microsoft 365 and Azure environments, including Entra ID, Exchange Online, Endpoint Manager (Intune), and on-premises Active Directory.
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, Windows operating systems (including Server 2019–2022), and experience with enterprise server and storage hardware, backup processes and print management solutions such as PaperCut.
- Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Power Apps and the Power Platform, along with proficiency in PowerShell scripting and demonstrated ability to deliver IT support across multi-site environments.
- Experience with Learning Management (LMS) (including Canvas and Moodle) and Student
Management Systems.
- Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, including Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Exchange Online, combined with an understanding of ITSM principles
covering incident, request, and change management.
About you:
- You hold a tertiary qualification in Information Technology or a related discipline, and have a minimum of two years’ hands-on experience in an IT support or helpdesk role.
- You have strong practical knowledge of Microsoft 365, Azure, Active Directory, and Windows operating systems across both desktop and server environments, and are comfortable
administering a broad range of organisational systems and platforms.
- You have foundational experience with Microsoft Power Apps and the Power Platform to support low-code business process solutions, and are confident reading, writing, and
modifying basic PowerShell scripts for administrative and automation tasks.
- You are a confident communicator who can adapt your style to suit users of all technical abilities, and you take genuine pride in delivering a high standard of customer service across diverse user groups, managing competing priorities calmly and effectively in a fast-paced, multi-site environment.
- You are methodical, detail-oriented, and committed to your own professional growth, with a genuine enthusiasm for learning new technologies and contributing to a collaborative and values-driven team.
