Schools of Australia (SSA) was established in 2019 to deliver a ground‑breaking
new model of Indigenous secondary education for students in remote communities
across northern Australia. SSA’s model is built on proven evidence of what
works for Indigenous students, their families and communities, combining
personal and social development, academic learning, and a jobs‑ready approach
with a central focus on Indigenous identity and culture. SSA is now in
a consolidation stage, focusing on the effective and sustainable operation
of its two schools – Yiramalay Studio School and Manjali Studio School.

take a valuable and meaningful place in their own communities and within
Australia.

Overview
The Grounds &
Facilities Maintenance Officer is responsible for maintaining the school’s
grounds, buildings, and vehicles to ensure they remain safe, functional, and
welcoming for students, staff, and the community. The role includes regular
landscaping and facilities upkeep, basic vehicle care, and driving duties to
support school operations.
This position reports
to the School Principal.
Key
Responsibilities
Grounds and Outdoor Maintenance
·Conduct
regular maintenance of school grounds, including mowing, pruning, weeding,
watering, and planting to maintain healthy, attractive, and functional outdoor
spaces.
·Perform
seasonal landscaping and garden projects to improve the appearance and
usability of school grounds.
·Conduct
regular inspections of outdoor areas to identify and address maintenance or
safety issues promptly.
·Maintain
natural and landscaped areas in accordance with environmental sustainability
practices and Indigenous cultural values.
·Operate
and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and ensure it is kept in good
working order.
Facilities Maintenance
·Undertake
building and facilities maintenance tasks such as painting, cleaning gutters,
replacing light bulbs, and conducting minor repairs.
·Assist
tradespeople and contractors by providing access, support, or preparatory work
as needed.
·Monitor
and report any issues with facilities, equipment, or utilities that require
attention or external repair.
·Assist
with the setup and pack down of school functions, community events, and
ceremonies.
·Conduct
regular checks on infrastructure assets including generators, bores, water
treatment plants, fire breaks, roads, fire equipment.
·Maintain
accurate records of maintenance schedules, repairs, and inspections.
Vehicle Maintenance and Driving Duties
·Conduct
regular checks on school vehicles, including fluid levels, tyres, lights, and
cleanliness.
·Arrange
cleaning to ensure vehicles are safe and operational.
·Maintain
vehicle logbooks and ensure compliance with SSA’s vehicle use policies.
·Drive
school vehicles as required, including transporting supplies, equipment, or
staff and students in accordance with SSA Vehicle and Driving Policy.
·Report
any vehicle faults, accidents, or safety concerns promptly.
Health & Safety
·Ensure
all work is performed in a safe manner and in accordance with relevant health
and safety procedures.
·Identify
and report hazards, assist in risk assessments, and maintain a clean,
hazard-free environment.
·Use
appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure safe operation of
tools and machinery.
·Support
emergency preparedness and assist with safety drills or procedures as required.
Skills
and Capabilities
·Practical
experience in groundskeeping, general maintenance, or related trade work.
·Ability
to safely operate and maintain grounds and maintenance equipment.
·Basic
vehicle maintenance knowledge and a current valid driver’s licence (manual
preferred).
·Strong
organisational and problem-solving skills with the ability to work
independently.
·Effective
communication and teamwork skills, with respect for Indigenous cultural
practices.
·Commitment
to workplace safety and the physical ability to perform outdoor and manual
tasks.
