POSITION OVERVIEW

This position is a senior, hands‑on operational role requiring extensive technical capability in irrigation systems, machinery, and farm maintenance, combined with practical livestock experience and on‑ground leadership across the Petro farming aggregation (Petro, High Hill & Wilara).

The role exists to ensure the reliable operation of centre pivot irrigation systems, cropping and fodder programs, and farm machinery, while also supporting livestock operations and providing strong leadership support to the WA North Operations Manager. The position demands a high level of independence, problem‑solving ability, and mechanical competence, with an expectation to lead by example and take ownership of operational outcomes.

WORK HEALTH & SAFETY (WHS)

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with relevant State WHS legislation and company policies and procedures.
  • Lead by example in safe livestock handling, machinery operation, irrigation maintenance, and chemical use.
  • Identify hazards, manage risks, and promote a strong safety culture across the operation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

IRRIGATION SYSTEMS (CORE FUNCTION)

  • Take primary responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of irrigation systems, with a strong focus on centre pivot infrastructure.
  • Diagnose and rectify electrical and mechanical faults, including motors, pumps, gearboxes, and control systems.
  • Ensure irrigation systems operate reliably and efficiently to support pasture, crop, and fodder production.
  • Proactively identify issues and implement preventative maintenance programs.

MACHINERY & TECHNICAL OPERATIONS

  • Operate and maintain a wide range of farm machinery, including GPS‑guided tractors, telehandlers, seeding equipment, and haymaking machinery.
  • Lead cropping and fodder programs including seeding, mowing, raking, and baling.
  • Apply strong mechanical aptitude and proven fault‑finding skills to minimize downtime and operational disruption.
  • Undertake welding, fabrication, and general repairs as required across plant and infrastructure
  • Carry out fencing, water infrastructure repairs, and general property maintenance. 
  • Maintain high standards of farm presentation, hygiene, and safety. 
  • Ensure all equipment and infrastructure is treated with care and maintained to company standards.
  • Ensure farm hygiene standards are maintained and all paddocks, buildings, and surrounds are kept safe and presentable.

LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT

  • Lead and execute day-to-day livestock operations including joining, calving, weaning, scanning, animal health programs, trucking, and testing.
  • Maximise livestock health, fertility, growth, and performance through effective pasture, feed, and seasonal management.
  • Ensure livestock are presented to market in optimal condition and within target weight specifications.
  • Maintain accurate livestock records including treatments, live weights, diagnostics, and monthly stock reconciliations.
  • Develop forage budgets to match livestock requirements and forecast supplementation needs
  • Attend off‑farm field days or training as agreed with management.

ANIMAL HEALTH

  • Monitor animal health and welfare and maintain accurate treatment records.
  • Administer animal health products in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, including correct dosage, stock suitability, and withholding periods.
  • Follow safe handling practices when using chemicals, drenches, sprays, and other Ag‑Chem products.

LEADERSHIP & OPERATIONAL SUPPORT

  • Support the WA North Operations Manager and act in a leadership capacity when required.
  • Lead by example and provide practical direction to staff and contractors.
  • Plan and execute daily and weekly work programs with minimal supervision.
  • Complete weekly reporting of activities and observations to management.
  • Work collaboratively with external specialists and adapt new technology and research to the farm system where appropriate.

  • Personal animals kept on farm only with prior approval and compliance with animal health requirements.
  • Heavy Combination (HC) License (or ability to transition to)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the operation and maintenance of centre pivot irrigation systems, including fault diagnosis for electrical and mechanical components.
  • Relevant vocational qualification (e.g., Certificate III in Agriculture, Mechanical Fitting, or similar) or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Experience with GPS guidance systems and precision agriculture technologies.
