Description

Queensland Rugby League is seeking an experienced and community-focused Area Manager to lead and support rugby league across your region. This role can be based out of Townsville or Cairns so If you have a passion for sport and enjoy working with clubs, volunteers and communities, this is your chance to play a key role in growing the game across Queensland.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As the Area Manager, you’ll lead a team responsible for supporting local clubs and leagues, ensuring community rugby league is delivered safely, effectively and continues to grow. You’ll work closely with a wide range of stakeholders, driving participation, strengthening capability and making sure the game runs smoothly across your area. You’ll be hands-on in delivering programs, supporting volunteers and building strong relationships, all while ensuring compliance and governance standards are met. We’ve broken it down a little more for you:

  • Drive the delivery of local and statewide participation programs, with a focus on growth, retention and accessibility across your area.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clubs, leagues, schools, government and other key stakeholders to support the ongoing development of the game.
  • Support the recruitment, development and retention of volunteers, ensuring clubs have the capability to operate effectively.
  • Ensure competitions and operations run smoothly, identifying risks and working proactively to resolve issues.
  • Monitor and drive compliance with QRL and NRL policies, legislation and governance requirements.
  • Use data and insights, including Club Health Checks, to identify opportunities and improve performance across your area.
  • Support facility planning and audits to ensure infrastructure supports future participation growth.
  • Promote inclusive participation opportunities, including programs supporting women, Indigenous and remote communities.
  • Represent QRL in your region, promoting rugby league and identifying opportunities for partnerships and funding.Lead and support your team to deliver on key priorities, providing coaching, direction and day-to-day guidance to ensure outcomes are achieved.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

A genuine passion for sport and an understanding of the important role it plays in bringing communities together. You’ll be confident working with a wide range of stakeholders and able to lead a remote team to deliver strong outcomes in a fast-paced environment.

You’ll also possess:

  • Experience in a leadership or area-based role, ideally within sport or a not-for-profit environment.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with volunteers, clubs, boards and government stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to deliver programs or projects within set timeframes.
  • A solid understanding of governance, compliance and operating within structured frameworks.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Confidence navigating challenges and resolving complex stakeholder issues.
  • Flexibility to travel and work hours that reflect the realities of community sport as this is not your normal 9AM-5PM gig.

A BIT ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a full-time position based in either Townsville or Cairns. QRL remunerate based on the position to ensure gender pay equity in sport and the salary for this position is $92,000 plus superannuation and a car.
