Description
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Senior Cloud Engineer to join our team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our cloud infrastructure. This is a senior individual contributor position with significant influence over technical direction, operating at the intersection of two mature cloud disciplines: sustaining and elevating a well-established AWS environment, and driving the uplift of our Azure footprint to meet the same standard of reliability, security, and operational maturity.
This role is suited to someone who is equally comfortable governing a complex production AWS estate as they are designing and building Azure environments from the ground up — bringing structure, best practice, and engineering rigour to both.
What we are looking for:
You bring deep, hands-on experience across both AWS and Azure — not just familiarity, but the ability to architect, build, troubleshoot, and govern at an engineering level on both platforms. Specifically, you will have:
- Proven experience managing and maturing a production-grade AWS environment, including account structure, IAM, networking, and operational controls
- Demonstrated ability to review and provide input into designs and implement Azure environments from a foundational level, including Azure Landing Zones, Entra ID integration, policy-driven governance, and network architecture
- Strong, practical Terraform skills — writing reusable modules, managing remote state, and integrating IaC pipelines into CI/CD workflows (experience with tools such as Buildkite, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps is advantageous)
- Experience operating in a financial services or similarly regulated industry, with an understanding of the compliance and audit requirements that come with it
- The ability to think strategically about platform design while remaining hands-on in delivery
- At this level, the successful candidate is expected to operate as a technical lead – providing hands-on guidance, coaching, and mentoring to the broader team, and elevating the capability of those around them alongside their own delivery output.
Qualifications/Experience:
Essential
- 8+ years of experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure roles, with at least 5 years working across both AWS and Azure in a hands-on capacity
- AWS certifications at Associate level or above (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or equivalent)
- Microsoft Azure certifications at Associate level or above (AZ-104, AZ-305, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated experience owning and maturing a production AWS environment at scale, including account governance, IAM, networking (VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect), and cost management
- Proven experience designing and deploying Azure platform foundations, including Azure Landing Zones, hub-and-spoke networking, Entra ID / Azure AD, Azure Policy, and Management Group hierarchy
- Strong, production-grade Terraform skills — module development, remote state management, workspace strategies, and pipeline-integrated deployments
- Experience integrating IaC workflows into CI/CD platforms such as GitHub Actions, Buildkite, or Azure DevOps
- Solid understanding of cloud security principles, including identity and access management, network segmentation, secrets management, and audit logging across both platforms
- Experience working in a regulated industry (financial services, superannuation, healthcare, or similar), with familiarity with compliance frameworks such as APRA CPS 234, ISO 27001, IRAP ISM, or SOC 2
Highly Desirable
- Experience with cloud security tooling such as AWS Security Hub, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, or equivalent CSPM platforms
- Familiarity with FinOps practices and cloud cost governance tooling
- Exposure to Netskope, or other cloud-delivered security platforms
- Experience with monitoring and observability platforms (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Datadog, or similar)
- Prior experience in a principal, lead, or senior individual contributor capacity, including contributing to architecture decision records and technical standards.
- Practical experience leveraging AI tooling, including large language model assistants such as Claude, to accelerate cloud engineering delivery, improve code and IaC quality, support documentation, and enhance problem-solving across the platform engineering lifecycle. Candidates who actively incorporate AI into their day-to-day engineering workflow and can demonstrate tangible quality or productivity outcomes will be highly regarded.
