The opportunity

This is a rare opportunity to join our small but mighty finance team in a role with genuine breadth, real ownership, and the chance to make your mark.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, this role sits as a true 2IC, you’ll be the go-to person when the Finance Manager is on leave, and a trusted point of contact for senior leadership across the business.

If you’re a CPA or CA who thrives on variety, takes pride in getting the details right, and wants to be more than just a cog in the machine, this one’s worth a read.

About Mutual Marketplace

Mutual Marketplace Pty Ltd is a customer focused organisation providing shared services that make business simple and unlock value for the Mutual Banking and adjacent sectors across Australia.

Jointly owned by People First Bank and Great Southern Bank, we support the mutual banking sector with practical, high quality shared services that drive sustainability.

We put customers at the centre of everything we do and continually innovate, improve and simplify how shared services are delivered.

Central to all that we do are our values of Kindness, Ambition, Responsibility and Efficiency.

About the role

As Corporate Accountant, you will take end-to-end ownership of our accounting function – from month-end and year-end close, to statutory compliance, financial reporting, and supporting the wider business with timely, accurate information.

As 2IC to the Finance Manager, you’ll step up confidently during periods of leave, managing priorities and maintaining clear communication with the executive team.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Owning the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal preparation, review, and general ledger reconciliations
  • Reviewing AP processing outputs for GST compliance, overseeing supplier Masterfile setups, and reviewing weekly and monthly payment runs with strong awareness of controls and fraud risk
  • Preparing Financial Statements, FBT returns, and biannual Payment Times Reporting; reviewing BAS returns prepared by the Assistant Accountant
  • Liaising with external auditors and the tax team on the annual income tax return
  • Reviewing fortnightly payroll and end-of-month payroll requirements
  • Preparing and lodging annual WorkCover estimates and true-ups
  • Supporting annual budgets, forecasting, and ad-hoc financial projects
  • Maintaining and building Analytics and KPI dashboards across savings, procurement spend, management fees, and new business income
  • Preparing and distributing monthly and quarterly customer reporting packs and executive reports
  • Documenting and reconciling customer savings generated by Mutual Marketplace
  • Liaising with our external ERP consultant on system-related tickets
  • Providing mentoring and day-to-day support to the broader finance team

What we’re looking for

CPA or CA qualification is mandatory. Beyond that, we’re looking for:

  • A minimum of five years of commercial accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, GST and FBT, with hands-on experience preparing statutory returns and financial statements
  • Experience reviewing payment runs at scale – including approval workflows, cutoffs, urgency decisions, and fraud and control awareness
  • A solid understanding of segregation of duties and audit trail integrity
  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to manage your own workload and deadlines without close supervision
  • Experience with TechOne Financials or Coupa Expense Management (highly regarded but not essential)

Beyond the technical, we want someone who communicates promptly and clearly, meets their deadlines, and flags issues early. You take ownership of outcomes – not just tasks – and have the drive to identify and implement improvements without being asked.

You’re equally comfortable working independently and collaborating as part of a small team, and you’re professional and approachable when engaging with senior stakeholders.

Why join us

This is a broad, end-to-end role with genuine ownership – not a narrow function buried in a large team. You’ll have direct visibility of the business, regular engagement with senior leadership, and the scope to shape how finance operates at Mutual Marketplace. We’re a collaborative, supportive team that takes our work seriously without taking ourselves too seriously.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Brisbane. Applications will be reviewed from 28 May. To apply, please submit your CV and a brief cover letter outlining your experience and what draws you to this role.
