Description

If you’re an experienced plant operator who enjoys outdoor work and operating a range of machinery, this is an opportunity to make a real impact. At Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation (Laynha), you’ll help maintain essential infrastructure and services that support remote homeland communities across East Arnhem Land.

As a Plant Operator, you’ll operate and maintain machinery, support infrastructure projects, and help maintain roads, airstrips, and community assets. Working as part of the Municipal and Essential Services team, you’ll contribute to keeping homelands connected, safe, and operational.

About You

You’re someone who enjoys practical work, takes pride in operating machinery safely and efficiently, and is comfortable working in remote environments. You have strong problem-solving skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team.

You understand the importance of maintaining equipment, following safety procedures, and delivering reliable services in challenging environments.

You’ll likely bring:

  • Experience operating civil construction, earthmoving, or infrastructure maintenance plant and equipment
  • Competency operating machinery such as forklifts, backhoes, telehandlers, skid steers, dozers, tractors, and trailers
  • Experience operating and maintaining small plant and equipment including chainsaws, whipper snippers, generators, pumps, and welding equipment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to undertake routine servicing and maintenance activities
  • Experience working in rural, regional, or remote environments
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Sound computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Experience working with Aboriginal communities and supporting training, mentoring, or skills development programs will be highly regarded.

You’ll also demonstrate respect for cultural diversity and a commitment to working collaboratively with Yolŋu communities across East Arnhem Land.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll play a key role in supporting Municipal and Essential Services across homeland communities by:

  • Operating civil plant and heavy equipment for maintenance, construction, and infrastructure projects and supporting logistics operations across the region
  • Maintaining roads, drainage systems, recreational areas, and community infrastructure
  • Conducting road inspections and preparing condition reports with recommended maintenance actions
  • Maintaining homeland airstrips and waste management facilities in accordance with safety and regulatory requirements
  • Undertaking routine servicing, maintenance, and minor repairs on plant, vehicles, and equipment
  • Supervising and promoting the safe use of plant and equipment within work teams
  • Supporting and mentoring Yolŋu staff through on-the-job training, knowledge sharing, and skills development
