About the position… 

The Senior Placement Practitioner is accountable to the Director for scoping placements for children and young people within residential care placements to transition back to living with family and kin. They will also be responsible for facilitating the development and implementation of projects, programs, services and systems to support the department in achieving its stated goals and strategic direction.

Senior Placement Practitioner role is responsible for enhancing capacity and the provision of effective case management, fostering good workers reporting relationships whilst providing consultation, advice and training.   

We have (2) full-time or part-time vacancy available for an initial 12-month period, with a high likelihood of extension.

Key Responsibilities…

  • Responding to and assessing placement requests to scope placements for children and young people who are currently residing in Residential Care or who are at risk of entering Residential Care.
  • Work collaboratively with DCP staff, external agencies, families and kin to assist with matching and placement planning for children and young people within residential care. 
  • Assess potential kinship family carers.
  • Undertake critical, sensitive, and complex negotiation processes and/or consultations with other relevant internal and external stakeholders including the assessment of the relative merits of projects, programs, services and service options. 
  • Use a culturally accountable model of practice which enables families to mobilise their own resources. 
  • Use child protection system knowledge, expertise, and experience to identify and implement strategies for system, policy and training improvements. 

About you…

Essential

  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and understanding of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities, including kinship systems. 
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a high-quality service to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people and their families to gain positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principles, Hierarchy and Aboriginal parenting practices to inform practice and support interventions
  • Provide sound case management practice including reports and assessments such as Winanagay (Temporary Placement) and risk and safety assessments.  
  • Experience facilitating and chairing family meetings, case conferences, multi-disciplinary agency meeting that promote Aboriginal family-led decision making and self-determination.
  • Provide professional guidance/direction on complex cases.
  • Experience or demonstrated ability to provide mentoring within the team, including culturally inclusive of practice quality.

Desirable

  • A degree level qualification in Social Work which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers and/or relevant experience commensurate with the position.

Job requirements…

  • You must hold a current South Australian Driver’s License or a license which permits you to drive in South Australia.
  • Successful candidates will be required to clear and maintain current probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check (Police Clearance) and Working with Children Check (applicants need to hold a current WWCC to apply).
