The Role

The TCN Systems Engineer will support the sustainment of Defence tactical communications capability within the CA31 Tactical Communications Network (TCN) team, working under the LC4SB Sustainment SPO. The role is responsible for delivering systems engineering activities across the capability lifecycle, supporting engineering investigations, technical certification, engineering change management, configuration management, design assurance and sustainment outcomes.

Working within an integrated Defence and industry environment, you will provide specialist engineering advice, assess technical and design documentation, manage supplier engineering deliverables, identify and manage technical risks, support safety and compliance activities, and contribute to strategic engineering planning. You will engage extensively with Defence, CASG, ADF and industry stakeholders while ensuring compliance with Defence engineering governance, technical regulatory frameworks and engineering management processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver complex systems engineering activities supporting Defence communications capability.
  • Conduct engineering investigations, defect analysis and technical assessments.
  • Develop, review and manage engineering documentation, certification packages and technical reports.
  • Manage engineering changes, configuration management activities and technical certification processes.
  • Assess technical and design packages and provide recommendations for implementation.
  • Manage supplier engineering deliverables and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Support safety assurance activities, safety cases and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Identify technical risks and provide engineering advice to support decision-making.
  • Contribute to engineering planning, project delivery and sustainment outcomes.
  • Mentor and support developing engineers within the team.

About You

You are an experienced Systems Engineer with strong Defence engineering experience and a solid understanding of systems engineering principles, governance and the Capability Life Cycle.

Essential Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of military deployable voice and data communications systems.
  • Experience within Defence engineering and sustainment environments.
  • Strong understanding of Systems Engineering principles and processes.
  • Experience with:Capability Life Cycle (CLC)Configuration ManagementEngineering Change ManagementTechnical Certification activitiesASDEFCON deliverablesSupplier and stakeholder managementTechnical documentation and reporting
  • Experience reporting to senior stakeholders at Director level and above.
  • Experience developing engineering plans and managing engineering activities.

Highly Desirable:

  • 8+ years delivering engineering outcomes within Defence.
  • Previous ADF tactical communications and/or COMSEC experience.
  • Experience with software defined radios and waveforms.
  • Understanding of RF and network engineering.
  • Safety Case development and System Safety Working Groups.
  • Experience using Defence ERP (SAP S/4 HANA) and OpenText.
  • Experience investigating defective products and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer and National Engineering Register (NER) registration.

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Communications, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar) recognised under the Washington Accord.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (Electrical Engineering) in accordance with the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019.
  • Ability to satisfy Defence Technical Proficiency Level 3 or 4 requirements.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to access US export-controlled materiel (dual citizenship restrictions may apply).
  • Must not have been employed full-time by Defence as an APS employee or ADF member within the previous 12 months if applying as an Above-the-Line contractor.
