The Role

The Software Engineer will report to the Chief Engineer (via the designated engineering lead) and will be responsible for supporting software engineering activities, including the management and governance of software and firmware systems.

The role will initially focus on analysing current practices and recommending a robust software management framework across the product portfolio. This will include the management of bare-metal operating systems, applications and dependencies, as well as firmware and specialised components such as radio waveforms.

The work of the Software Engineer role will include: engaging with stakeholders, development and review of Software Management Plans and Technical Risk Assessments (TRAs). In addition, the software engineer will also develop a draft project management plan to aid in the implementation of the software management plan.

This role will be available in either Canberra or Melbourne location.

About You

The Software Engineer is accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex engineering work within an integrated workforce. They are also accountable to ensure they have knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.

The Software Engineer will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. They will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. They will provide detailed engineering technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.

The Software Engineer will have considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to remediation efforts associated with addressing non-compliances.
