The Role
The Narrowband Test & Evaluation Engineer will support Defence UHF SATCOM capability through the planning, execution and reporting of communications and MILSATCOM test activities. Based onsite at HMAS Harman, this is a hands-on technical role focused on test and evaluation, SATCOM engineering support, test facility development and stakeholder engagement with Australian Defence and international partners.
The role will contribute to MIL-STD conformance testing activities, development of test processes and procedures, configuration of test facilities, engineering support activities, and engagement with key Defence and U.S. Department of Defense stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support UHF SATCOM and RF communications engineering activities.
- Develop and conduct test and evaluation activities, including test procedures, equipment management, fault reporting and analysis of results.
- Prepare technical reports documenting test activities, findings and recommendations.
- Support U.S./Australian MIL-STD Conformance Testing activities and agreements.
- Engage with Australian and U.S. Defence stakeholders, including JITC, SATOPS Brigade and USSPACECOM.
- Support the configuration and development of SATCOM test facilities, including integration of test equipment and software.
- Develop design, configuration and test documentation.
- Conduct test facility characterisation activities to support MIL-STD conformance testing.
- Develop Australian test processes and procedures aligned to U.S. test plans and standards.
- Conduct dry-run testing and support development of test scripts and automation.
- Support the establishment of UHF SATCOM engineering support services for Defence stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance, testing support and engineering advice to Defence and ADF stakeholders.
- Support monthly reporting activities against deliverable requirements.
About You
You are an experienced SATCOM, RF or Communications Engineer with strong test and evaluation experience and a solid understanding of Defence communications environments.
Essential Experience:
- Comprehensive experience in SATCOM and/or RF communications engineering.
- Knowledge of Defence UHF MILSATCOM communications capability.
- Experience undertaking test and evaluation activities.
- Experience developing test procedures and supporting test campaigns.
- Experience adhering to safety requirements and test program measures.
- Experience managing test equipment and conducting test activities.
- Experience analysing test data, identifying faults and tracking issues.
- Experience preparing technical reports and documenting test results.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience supporting MIL-STD conformance testing activities.
- Experience developing test scripts and test automation.
- Experience configuring communications test facilities and equipment.
- Experience engaging with Defence, ADF and international stakeholders.
- Experience supporting SATCOM engineering activities within Defence environments.
- Experience developing engineering processes, procedures and technical documentation.
