The Role

The Fleet Engineer supports the Chief Marine Engineer and Fleet and Marine Engineering Section in delivering engineering governance, certification assurance, and technical oversight across the ABF maritime fleet. The role contributes to the management of vessel certification, engineering records, and fleet technical data systems to ensure statutory and safety-critical documentation remains current, accurate and accessible. The position supports the maintenance of fleet certification dashboards, engineering registers and technical documentation systems that underpin safe and compliant vessel operations. The Fleet Engineer also assists with the review of engineering documentation including repair plans, defect reports, and technical investigations to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and ABF engineering governance arrangements. In undertaking these duties, the role works closely with seagoing engineers, in-service support providers, shipyards, and sustainment teams to support safe and effective fleet maintenance and sustainment activities. The role contributes to engineering data analysis and defect trend monitoring to support preventative maintenance planning, risk management, and engineering decision-making across the fleet. The Fleet Engineer ensures work practices remain consistent with the ABF Safety Management System, applicable International Maritime Organisation (IMO) conventions, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Marine Orders, and other regulatory frameworks governing ABF vessel operations.

About You

  • Maintain and provide assurance of the currency and accuracy of fleet certification dashboards and vessel certificate databases, including registers for hoses, life-saving appliances, lifting and safety equipment, and class and statutory certification (including certificates of exemption and equivalence).
  • Maintain systems used to capture and manage technical data within the ABF fleet technical data library, ensuring engineering documentation is properly controlled, accessible, and current.
  • Maintain and monitor the CAPDEF defect database, conduct trend analysis, and alert the Fleet Engineering team to emerging reliability issues or patterns indicating preventative maintenance or engineering intervention may be required.
  • Assist with the review of engineering documentation including repair plans, technical investigations, engineering change documentation, and defect reports to ensure work aligns with applicable regulatory, safety and engineering governance requirements.
  • Liaise with seagoing engineers, vessel crews and operational units to obtain technical information, clarify engineering issues, and support the management of defects and maintenance activities across the fleet.
  • Engage with in-service support providers, shipyards, and sustainment teams to support engineering oversight of maintenance activities and ensure engineering documentation and certification requirements are appropriately addressed.
  • Assist with maintaining engineering assurance frameworks that support fleet compliance with the ABF Safety Management System, IMO conventions, AMSA Marine Orders and other applicable maritime regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of engineering reports, certification documentation and technical artefacts supporting fleet engineering governance.
  • Build and maintain effective professional relationships with internal stakeholders, service providers, regulators, classification societies, and other organisations supporting ABF fleet operations.
  • Monitor task performance and support the management of engineering risks, change management activities and communication of engineering outcomes within the Fleet and Marine Engineering team.
