The Role

The Aerial Systems Engineer undertakes transition and specialised engineering tasks, required to deliver and introduce into service aerial surveillance capabilities and ground support systems.

The Aerial Systems Engineer provides technical and subject matter expertise (SME), driving the verification and validation (V&V) strategies and support the integration of complex systems in a regulated environment, bringing proven experience in stakeholder management to deliver mission-critical solutions that support national security.

Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Marine Communications Engineer can be many and varied and responsibilities may include:

  • Apply V&V and systems integration expertise to deliver timely and high-quality project outcomes.
  • Conduct reviews of Service Providers project plans and deliverables to assess technical competency and assure the branch it contains clear and concise content that meets the required engineering and technical standards.
  • Undertake engineering assessments of designs, provide recommendations on whether the designs achieve fit-for-purpose, and identify any assumptions, risks, constraints or dependencies on the branch.
  • Resolve engineering issues and problems, applying innovation and knowledge of emerging technologies.
  • Generate both executive level and technical briefs, with varying degrees of technical detail tailored to the appropriate audience, ensuring the key messages are clear and concise.
  • Engage Operations Coordinators and Plans, to ensure the delivery of complex systems is fit-for-purpose and meets end-user needs and timings.
  • Support engineering workshops with Service Providers, and the Department’s ICT and Security stakeholders, representing the branch as the technical expert, working collaboratively to achieve mission effective and value-for-money outcomes for the department.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote locations to support V&V activities.
  • Where requested by the Aviation Contracts team, provide engineering consultation on technical matters in support of the branch and other key stakeholders.

About You

Essential Experience:

  • Possess or able to obtain and maintain an NV1 security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Formal qualifications in Engineering or relevant applicable degree.
  • Prior ABF, Defence or Defence Industry experience, delivering complex systems within the design, integration and V&V engineering phases.
  • Strong understanding of and the ability to interpret Statement of Work (SOW), functional performance specifications (FPS), and system design specifications (SDS) to ensure designs will meet ABF’s requirements.
  • Experience developing and delivery complex Test and Evaluation (T&E) programs, including developing T&E Plan, Verification Cross Reference Matrix (VCRM), generating test procedures and test reports, across various engineering test phases, e.g. factory and system acceptance testing, physical and functional configuration audits.
  • Strong safety focus, applying risk-based engineering to achieve required V&V outcomes.
  • Must be a person as defined by the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) as legally authorised, and eligible to be cleared, to access ITAR controlled information.

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience and knowledge of command, control and communication systems in a Defence or Civil Aviation environment.
  • Familiar with the Department’s Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
