HotDoc is Australia’s largest patient engagement platform — connecting over 10 million patients with more than 21,000 practitioners. Today we’re where millions of Australians book their doctor; our ambition is to become the place people manage their healthcare, not just book it. That means fixing the most frequent, most broken parts of the care journey (like prescription management) and turning them into experiences patients and practitioners can rely on. We’re a scale-up at heart — we move fast, take real ownership, and build in small, cross-functional teams where the work is visible and reaches millions.
This is a hands-on IC role built around three things: architectural and system design thinking, AI-native engineering practice, and self-starting leadership-by-example. You’ll design and build performant, modular systems across the full stack, working in an AI-native way — generating, reviewing and refining code rather than writing from scratch — with the judgment to know when AI is right, when it’s wrong, and how to stitch its output into systems that hold up.
The pace is fast and the codebase is evolving. We need engineers who lead through influence and example, find gaps and solve them without being asked, and roll with change rather than wait for things to settle. You will be:
- Designing and building performant, modular systems — architectural and system design thinking, not just function-level engineering
- Working in an AI-native way across the full SDLC — AI tooling as your primary authoring mechanism, with disciplined review and judgment on what it produces
- Owning work end-to-end — design, build, ship, monitor — driving it start-to-finish without waiting for direction
- Finding gaps and solving them without being asked, and creating from nothing when the path forward isn’t yet defined
- Leading through example — raising the bar via code review, pairing, knowledge sharing and technical judgment
- Pushing the edge of AI-native engineering — experimenting with new workflows and frameworks and sharing what works
- Surfacing risks and blockers early (no surprises); participating in incident response and on-call rotation
- Rolling with change, supporting the team through it, and contributing to engineering culture across HotDoc
Skills we need you to have:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with senior-level work in a SaaS environment
- Ruby on Rails — essential; current, hands-on and confident
- Full-stack capability — you can move between backend and frontend without needing a handoff
- Strong architectural and system design thinking — you design for performance and modularity and reason about tradeoffs at the system level
- A current, AI-native engineering practice (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) as your primary authoring mechanism, with disciplined review of AI-generated code
- Self-starting — you find gaps and drive work start-to-finish without close direction
- Comfort with ambiguity and constant change
- Strong written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences
It would be great if you had any of:
- Ember — essential for some of our teams; for others, current React/Angular experience and a clear capacity to ramp up on Ember quickly is fine
- Experience in healthcare, FinTech or other regulated environments
- Experience with integration platforms or patient-facing product development
- Experience building AI-powered product features (not just using AI tooling for development)
- Experience contributing to architectural decisions for SaaS platforms at scale
- Demonstrated leadership-by-example in an IC role — raising the bar for peers without formal authority
- Pushing AI-assisted engineering beyond autocomplete (agentic workflows, prompt engineering, AI-driven refactoring)
- Open source contributions, technical writing or public talks; or formal qualifications in Software Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
What we will provide to you:
- A genuine mission — work that directly impacts the health of millions of Australians
- Real investment in AI capability, plus a Learning & Development and AI tooling budget
- Flexible working — hybrid or fully remote, whichever works best for you
- Generous parental leave, wellbeing initiatives and real career progression
HotDoc is a place where you can be you. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and both hybrid and fully remote candidates equally. If you need any adjustments to the application or interview process, please let us know.
