About the role

HD IT is seeking a high-caliber Cyber Security Specialist to lead Essential Eight Maturity Level 1 and 2 gap assessments, remediation planning, and broader cyber security compliance initiatives for Australian SMB clients. This is a senior, hands-on, client-facing role suited to someone who can assess risk with confidence, provide trusted strategic advice, and drive measurable security uplift.

While cyber security is the core focus of the role, the successful candidate will also contribute to broader technical work across Microsoft 365, Azure, networking, and infrastructure projects where their skills can add value.

This role is ideal for someone with deep cyber capability who also enjoys working across the broader Microsoft and infrastructure stack.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead Essential Eight Maturity Level 1 and 2 gap assessments across a diverse SMB client base.
  • Design clear, prioritised remediation roadmaps aligned to client risk, business priorities, and operational realities.
  • Partner with internal engineers and client stakeholders to lead the delivery of security uplift initiatives.
  • Provide high-value compliance guidance, reporting, and security recommendations to technical and business audiences.
  • Contribute to client workshops, technical reviews, and pre-sales engagements where senior cyber expertise is required.
  • Contribute to broader client technology projects across Microsoft 365, Azure, networking, and infrastructure, bringing a security first lens to wider solution delivery.

Skills and experience

To succeed in this role, you will bring strong technical depth, proven cyber delivery experience, and the credibility to advise clients with confidence.

  • Demonstrated experience in cyber security, compliance, GRC, or hands-on technical security delivery.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Essential Eight, including experience supporting Maturity Level 1 and 2 uplift initiatives.
  • Proven ability to conduct gap assessments and develop practical, outcome-focused remediation plans.
  • A solid understanding of Microsoft 365 security and modern SMB environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain risk in plain language.
  • Experience in managed services, consulting, or other client-facing environments will be highly regarded.
  • Broad technical capability across Azure, on-premises servers and virtual infrastructure, and networking, with the flexibility to support wider project delivery alongside the core cyber focus.

Certifications and qualifications

CISSP is highly desirable. Candidates with CISM, Microsoft security certifications, ISO 27001-related qualifications, or similar recognised cyber security credentials are also encouraged to apply. Practical experience delivering outcomes in client environments will be highly valued.

Why join us?

  • Join a growing MSP with a strong reputation for delivering practical, high-impact cyber security outcomes to Australian SMBs.
  • Work across a broad range of client environments where your expertise will influence both security posture and business outcomes.
  • Play a key role in shaping and expanding HD IT’s cyber security capability as the practice continues to grow.
  • Parramatta based, onsite parking.

If you are ready to take on a visible and impactful role helping Australian SMBs strengthen their cyber security maturity, we would welcome your application.

As part of the final stages of the recruitment process, candidates will be required to undertake a National Police Check.
