GEGAC are implementing the Aboriginal Children in Aboriginal Care Program (ACAC) and require an individual who is competent in expert case management; someone who is passionate about delivering a service that is safe, effective, culturally sensitive and committed to self-determination.

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.

 

Position Purpose

The Wangun Lidj Case Practitioner is responsible for delivering culturally strong, child-centred case management to Aboriginal children and young people involved in the Aboriginal Children in Aboriginal Care (ACAC) program.

Operating within the pre-authorisation (“as if”) phase under Section 18 of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, the role supports the transition of statutory decision-making to Aboriginal community control.

The practitioner is responsible for planning, implementing and reviewing casework, making informed decisions, and contributing to improved safety, permanency and cultural outcomes for children.

The role actively embeds Aboriginal cultural authority, kinship systems and connection to Country in all aspects of practice.

 

Key Selection Criteria 

·Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Aboriginal Culture with the ability to liaise with and support the local community.

·Ability to engage with Aboriginal children and families to promote safety and culture.

·Understanding of childhood development, when assessing safety and wellbeing.

·Experience with case planning, ability to engage families in setting goals and tasks to address concerns.

·Highly developed skills and commitment to supervision and performance management.

·Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously to develop, implement & manage effective case plans for multiple children or young people simultaneously.

·Demonstrated understanding of trauma & its impact on the development & behaviour of children.

·Understanding of the complex care needs of children & young people living in Out of Home Care.

·Expert knowledge and ability administer, the Children Youth and Families Act 2005 and the Child Wellbeing Act 2005 particularly relating to Aboriginal children and families.

·Experience or willingness to undertake court work needed to ensure children’s safety and wellbeing.

·Ability to prepare high-quality reports, maintain accurate records & use computer-based technologies for administrative practices.

·Ability to adapt rapidly to changing circumstances & organisational requirements.

 

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

·Valid Victorian driver’s licence    ESSENTIAL

·Strong understanding of Child, Youth and Families Act 2015 and the Best Interest Principles Framework    ESSENTIAL

·A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check    ESSENTIAL

·A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background    DESIRABLE

·Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements    ESSENTIAL

·A recognised Diploma of Community Services work or similar qualification which is studied over a minimum of 2 academic years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) and includes:

A) a primary focus on child development, human behaviour, family dynamics and/or impacts of trauma.

B) and supervised fieldwork placements (ideally completed within the child and family welfare sector) and at least one unit of study in case management, case work practice or counselling.

OR

A recognised Social Work degree or a similar welfare or behavioural related degree which includes a primary focus on child development, human behaviour, family dynamics and/or impacts of trauma; and preferably a practical component such as counselling or case work practices.    ESSENTIAL
