GEGAC Dala Yooro Kindergarten is seeking a passionate and dedicated Aboriginal Language Educator to join our warm, culturally enthusiastic environment on a part-time basis.

This is a unique opportunity to play a meaningful role in strengthening cultural identity, language revival, and connection to Country for our children. You will support our Boorai’s learning journey by embedding Aboriginal language into everyday experiences, storytelling, song and play – becoming an important part to their cultural story.

Organisational Profile

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.

 

Position Purpose

The Aboriginal Language Educator is primarily responsible for supporting the Dala Yooro funded kinder programs in the delivery of the Early Childhood Language program.

The Language Educator must demonstrate understanding of Local Aboriginal Culture and heritage in relation to the development of curriculum for the early year’s children.

The Language Educator is expected to provide a high level of support responding to the development and delivery of the language program and will demonstrate an understanding of the land of our GunaiKunai people and Aboriginal culture.

Key Selection Criteria 

·Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Aboriginal culture with the ability to liaise with and support the local community.

·Demonstrated capability to meet the key responsibilities and key activities of this position.

·Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to relate to Aboriginal Families and young children.

·Ability and experience in coaching, mentoring and supporting families with young children.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

·Valid Victorian driver’s licence    ESSENTIAL

·Minimum Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care qualification    ESSENTIAL

·Recognised Traditional Owner to teach language    ESSENTIAL

·A working knowledge of computers    DESIRABLE

·A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check    ESSENTIAL

·A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background    DESIRABLE

·Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements    ESSENTIAL
