About the Role
This is not a standard data analytics or engineering role.
It’s about thinking in systems and building our data platform from first principles. As an AI Data Engineer in our Platform team, you will design and build the end-to-end data foundations that translate our real-world processes — executed by both human teams and agentic workflows — into clean, structured, and scalable data models our business can rely on.
AI is not a side capability in this role. AI is a core part of how the Platform team works and how you will be expected to design, build & manage your data products. You’ll use AI tooling throughout the full data engineering lifecycle — from scoping and schema design through to design reviews, refactoring, and governance – and you’ll build medallion data layers that serve AI consumers with the same rigour and intent you bring to human consumers.
You’ll be part of a hands-on, genuinely collaborative team of engineers, system thinkers and innovators. Think getting around a whiteboard together, unpacking problems, challenging ideas, and designing solutions as a group. The work is substantive; the problems are challenging; and expectations on the whole Platform team to continue delivering are high.
This is a hybrid role, balancing focused work from home with in-office collaboration. When you’re in, you’ll be based in our modern South Bank office, with easy access to great cafes, restaurants, and public transport.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Data Modelling & Schema Design — Designing, implementing and maintaining clear, structured data models based on both existing models and first-principles thinking, using AI-assisted tooling throughout — from scoping and schema design to reviewing existing models, reasoning through edge cases, and refactoring legacy structures safely.
- Medallion Architecture – Designing, implementing and maintaining bronze, silver, and gold data infrastructure layers that deliver accurate, reliable perspectives to both AI and human consumers — ensuring each layer is purpose-built, clearly governed, and trusted by the teams and systems that depend on it.
- Data Ingestion & ELT — Designing, implementing and maintaining ELT pipelines that extract data from source systems, aligned with how we generate & consume data.
- Data Quality & Governance — Working closely with our colleagues to ensure our implemented data schemas accurately reflect Five Good Friends’ business process taxonomy, organisational & industry required rules ontology.
- Software Engineering Collaboration — Working side-by-side with a core team of talented software engineers, systems analysts, and operational stakeholders to deliver comprehensive Platform solutions that span distributed deployment topologies.
- AI-Enabled Ways of Working — Actively embracing AI productivity tooling (such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, VS Code AI extensions) across schema design, project scoping, documentation, and refactoring — and help establish responsible, effective patterns for AI-assisted data engineering across the team.
About You
You think in systems and care about how things connect, not just how they work individually. You’re collaborative, hold a high bar for quality, and confidently challenge ideas to bring clarity to ambiguity.
You’ll bring:
- Proven SQL and data modelling capabilities
- Experience with a variety of data pipeline, integration and ELT tools and approaches
- A detail-oriented mindset with a focus on data integrity and consistency
- Confidence communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- A proactive, ownership-driven approach to your work
- Willingness to collaborate and co-design comprehensive & integrated solutions that span beyond the data platform.
You’re also energised by AI and actively using AI-assisted tools or working with AI/ML concepts, and excited by how data platforms enable the design, delivery and management of intelligent platform-based solutions.
Bonus points for experience with Snowflake, Azure Fabric, PostgreSQL, Crunchy, dbt, Airflow/Dagster in particular.
