The Role:
We’re looking for a Staff Analytics Engineer to join our data team at Fitness Passport. You’ll own the shared data platform — the modelling layer, the standards, and what self-service looks like across the whole organisation. This is a central role — you don’t embed into a product squad, you serve all of them through the modelling layer. We don’t have a formal semantic or metrics layer today. Building one is a core part of this job. While there are no direct reports, this is a genuine staff-level leadership position: you set modelling standards, review PRs from every data team member, and mentor the L4 Analytics Engineer.
What you will be doing:

Data Modelling & Schema Design – Own the modelling layer in Snowflake. Make pragmatic schema design decisions — use dimensional modelling where it helps, not where it doesn’t.

Semantic Layer & Self-Service – Build a metrics layer so definitions live in one place. Make it possible for PDS roles, Finance Analysts, and PMs to answer their own questions without filing a ticket.

DBT Platform Ownership – Own the architecture and standards of the shared dbt project. Write the style guide, enforce it in PR review, and own the CI/CD pipeline

Data Quality & Testing – Define and maintain the testing strategy: schema tests, data tests, freshness checks, anomaly detection. When issues surface, own the response

Technical Leadership & Mentorship – Mentor the L4 Analytics Engineer. Set modelling conventions for the team — write them down, explain why, and change them when they’re wrong. Drive technical design discussions.

AI Augmented Delivery – Use AI assistants daily for writing, reviewing, and documenting code. Automate the repetitive parts of the modelling pipeline where it makes sense. Share what works with the rest of the data team.
About You:
Technical:
- Deep SQL and dbt — able to look at a dbt project and say what’s wrong with it
- Has built or significantly reworked a semantic or metrics layer before
- Comfortable in Python for scripting, automation, and data quality tooling
- Experience with Snowflake or a comparable cloud data warehouse
- Opinions on testing and data quality that go beyond not-null checks
- Already uses AI tools (Claude, Copilot, etc.) to get work done
Communication & design philosophy:
- Can explain modelling decisions to people who will never open dbt
- Writes useful documentation — READMEs, model descriptions, and more
- Pragmatic, not dogmatic — uses dimensional modelling, wide tables, OBT, or whatever fit the problem
- Thinks about the person querying the data, not the elegance of the model
Leadership & culture:
- Picks up ambiguous problems and figures them out
- Mentors others and puts real time into it
- Comfortable in a flat team where ownership is clear but everyone chips in beyond their lane
