About the role
We are seeking a reliable and practical casual gardener to help maintain the outdoor environments at our early learning service. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in keeping spaces safe and tidy, and understands the importance of maintaining a welcoming environment for children, families and educators. The gardener will work one day per fortnight, completing general gardening, grounds maintenance and outdoor upkeep tasks across the service.
Key responsibilities
The role may include:
- Mowing and brush cutting lawns and outdoor areas
- Weeding garden beds, paths and play areas
- Planting new vegetables, herbs, shrubs and trees on a seasonal basis
- Pruning shrubs, small trees and overgrown vegetation
- Blowing or sweeping outdoor surfaces
- Take delivery of and spreading mulch and natural soft fall
- Maintaining garden beds and natural play spaces
- Checking outdoor areas for hazards such as branches, sharp objects or unsafe vegetation
- Keeping sheds, tools and outdoor storage areas tidy
- Reporting maintenance issues, safety concerns or larger repair needs to management
About you
The ideal person will be:
- Reliable, punctual and able to work independently
- Practical, hands-on and comfortable with outdoor work
- Experienced in basic gardening or grounds maintenance
- Safety-conscious, especially in an environment used by young children
- Able to plan and implement annual grounds maintenance strategy
- Respectful of children, families and staff when working onsite
Requirements
The successful applicant will need:
- Previous gardening, landscaping or grounds maintenance experience
- Ability to safely use basic gardening equipment
- Current Working With Children Check, or willingness to obtain one
- Completion of Child Safe Training (eLearning) if working during hours of operation
- Own transport
- Own tools and equipment preferred, but not essential
- Public liability insurance required if engaged as a contractor
Physical requirements
This role involves outdoor physical work, including bending, lifting, carrying, walking on uneven ground and using gardening tools or equipment.
Employment conditions
This is a casual or contracting role for approximately one day per fortnight. Days and times will be agreed in advance and may vary depending on weather, operational needs and seasonal requirements. Note: rate of pay will be determined by factors such as: type of employment (contracting vs. casual), shifts (weekends vs. weekday), use of own tools, and level of experience.
