- Join our dedicated team as a Senior Support Worker, creating a culturally safe space where Aboriginal women experiencing family violence can access immediate support, coordinated referrals, and engaging community programs that foster connection, resilience, and self determination.
About the Role
We are seeking an energetic and culturally competent Senior Support Worker to deliver vital, culturally safe support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women experiencing or at risk of family violence. In this role, you will assess immediate safety needs, facilitate referrals to Djirra and external agencies, and mentor junior staff to build a supportive team environment. You will also coordinate the KWP’s annual program of activities, ensuring a safe and empowering space for women to connect, learn, and heal.
What You’ll Do

Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women: Provide immediate, culturally safe support and safety planning for women facing family violence while maintaining strict confidentiality and guiding junior staff on risk assessment.

KWP Cultural and Wellbeing Workshops: Lead the delivery and evaluation of cultural workshops, manage participant engagement, and maintain accurate attendance and resource records.

Networking, Liaison and Community Outreach: Represent Djirra at community events and the “Sister’s Day Out” program across Victoria, while building strong relationships with stakeholders and donors to support our mission.

Cultural Competence: Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal community, specifically regarding the impact of family violence on Aboriginal women. You understand family violence within an Aboriginal cultural framework that centers the experiences of Aboriginal women.

Communication Skills: High-level oral and listening skills that allow you to build trusting relationships with Aboriginal people who have experienced trauma.

Technical Proficiency: Intermediate PC skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite and data systems.

Practical Requirements: A current driver’s license is essential, as some out-of-hours and/or overnight travel may be required.

Requirements
Essential
- A Victorian Employees Working with Children’s Check card or willing to obtain one
- Willing to obtain a Police Check at Djirra’s expense
- Experience working in Aboriginal organisations and the community in roles requiring knowledge and intuitive skills to support Aboriginal women.
- Driver’s License
Desirable
- Experience in the family violence sector, preferably with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women will be highly regarded but is not essential.
- Tertiary qualifications in Community Services or related discipline will be highly regarded but are not essential.
