Thorne Harbour Health (THH) is a community-controlled LGBTIQ+ health organisation with a 40-year history responding to HIV and supporting the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ communities. We are seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander HIV Peer Worker to strengthen Mob+, our peer-led support group for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with HIV, and to help establish a culturally informed Advisory Group.

About the Role

Working one day per week, the HIV Peer Worker will:

  • Facilitate Mob+ gatherings, including yarning circles, discussions, and cultural activities.
  • Provide culturally safe peer support and education to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with HIV.
  • Conduct outreach to engage community members not yet connected to Mob+.
  • Build leadership skills among Mob+ members and support group sustainability.
  • Collaborate with Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and sector partners.
  • Promote Mob+ within local and national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander HIV networks.
  • Contribute to establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group to guide THH programs.

This role is grounded in community development principles and meaningful involvement of people living with HIV (MIPA), ensuring programs are culturally safe, peer-led, and responsive to community needs.

About You

You will have a tertiary qualification in community development, health, social sciences, or equivalent lived experience and identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person living with HIV.

You will also have:

  • Experience in peer support, community engagement, or advocacy within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Strong understanding of health and social issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with HIV.
  • Ability to facilitate culturally safe group discussions, workshops, and community activities.
  • Experience collaborating with Aboriginal community-controlled organisations or health services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong digital literacy.
  • A current Victorian Driver’s License.
