About the Role
The Senior Buyer is accountable for leading the end-to-end product strategy and category performance, ensuring commercial targets, brand alignment and customer relevance are achieved across multiple product divisions and markets. The role provides leadership to cross-functional partners in Planning, Brand , Marketing and Design, driving data-led and customer-focused buying decisions.
Success in this position requires a deep understanding of market trends, customer preferences and supplier dynamics. The Buyer will drive strategic alignment with Planning, Brand, Marketing, and Operations teams to develop optimised assortments, maintain healthy inventory levels, and maximise profitability. This is a highly commercial role, combining strategic decision-making authority with a strong eye for product and detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end buying strategy, aligning range architecture, financial budgets and regional assortment to deliver optimised ranges that meet commercial targets.
- Drive the overarching category strategy, balancing growth within CSB’s broader product architecture.
- Develop and execute a multi-category product assortment that is regionally specific, in line with CSB’s brand identity, market trends and customer demand.
- Lead category sales and margin objectives by planning profitable buys, optimising pricing, and managing product performance across seasonal and core ranges.
- Lead continuous global market and competitor analysis to anticipate emerging trends, pricing shifts and category opportunities, translating insights into data-driven seasonal and long-term buy strategies.
- Optimise stock health by implementing in-season trading actions, such as reorders, size replenishments, markdown or promotional activities.
- Review on-order status weekly to identify risks and opportunities, along with the seasonal GTM collaborating with the Brand and Operations team to close any gaps.
- Review and report on Sales vs Forecasts weekly, ensuring clear cross functional communication. Propose actions including communication of any significant variances to stakeholders.
- Own the financial performance at a category level, identifying those meeting or exceeding sales, margin and inventory productivity targets. Communicate shortfalls with solution based recommendations.
- Lead the product-related inputs for annual and seasonal budgeting, providing robust buy plans per region and financial scenarios informed by historical trading, market trends and customer insights.
- Partner with Finance and Merchandise Planning teams to refine and agree on budgeting assumptions & Open-to-Buy (OTB) allocations.
- Present range performance at Monthly and Quarterly Business Reviews (MBR/QBR), delivering insights and recommendations for future range, pricing and investment decisions.
- Lead cross-functional range reviews, aligning Marketing, Brand, Planning, and Operations, and representing Merchandise in S&OP, Trade, MBR’s and post-season reviews.
- Drive growth by identifying and developing commercial opportunities across categories, blocks and fabrics, validated through macro and micro data and enriched with a creative lens.
- Support brand activations such as pop-ups, community events, styling suites and movement series by aligning product selections with brand storytelling, engagement and business goals.
- Work closely with Creative and Brand to influence product storytelling, including styling direction, key looks and hero product focus for seasonal campaigns and content shoots.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, Business, Commerce, Retail Management or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience).
- Additional qualifications in Buying, Merchandising or Product Development desirable.
- Strong analytical skills with advanced Microsoft Excel and merchandise system experience; proven ability to interpret complex data and translate it into clear, actionable commercial decisions.
- High level of accuracy and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving challenges.
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills; adept at influencing, engaging and building strong relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- Self starter mentality, able to work autonomously and lead workflows to deliver senior outputs for Executive consumption.
- Proven track record in fashion or apparel retail buying or merchandising, with knowledge of supply chain principles and product lifecycle management.
- Strong understanding of customer needs, market dynamics, supplier capabilities and merchandising principles, with a preference for knowledge of the Australian retail landscape.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with Planning, Marketing, Design and Operations to deliver cohesive product strategies.
