Description

About Av-Comm

Av-Comm is a trusted provider of satellite communications solutions, delivering secure and reliable systems to science, defence, government and commercial clients. With a strong focus on engineering quality and mission-critical technologies, we design, manufacture, integrate and deploy SATCOM and communications infrastructure across Australia and internationally.

Role Overview

We are seeking an RF & SATCOM Engineer to support the design, integration, testing and delivery of satellite communications and RF systems across Av-Comm projects and contracts.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on practical problem solving, technical delivery and system performance. The successful candidate will bring strong RF fundamentals, SATCOM or communications systems experience, and the ability to work effectively within established engineering processes and project delivery frameworks.

The role is suited to an experienced engineer who is comfortable working independently on complex technical tasks, contributing to design and readiness reviews, supporting integration and verification activities, and helping deliver reliable systems for mission-critical environments.

This role may involve occasional domestic and international travel to support system integration, factory acceptance testing, site commissioning, troubleshooting and customer deployment activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the design, development, integration and delivery of SATCOM, RF and communications systems.
  • Contribute to system architecture, RF chain design, interface definition and technical trade-off activities.
  • Support RF, analogue and digital hardware design activities where required.
  • Review schematics, RF assemblies and subsystem designs for performance, manufacturability and integration considerations.
  • Contribute to requirements analysis, verification planning, test procedures and engineering documentation.
  • Support system integration activities, including troubleshooting, debugging, fault investigation and root-cause analysis.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical reviews, test readiness reviews and project readiness reviews.
  • Contribute to test, verification and validation activities to ensure system performance, compliance and customer requirements are met.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning and field troubleshooting activities.
  • Identify technical risks, integration issues and design constraints, and support timely resolution.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, project management, manufacturing, suppliers and customer-facing teams to achieve delivery outcomes.
  • Ensure engineering work aligns with internal standards, safety requirements, quality expectations and applicable regulatory frameworks.
  • Prepare or contribute to technical documents such as test plans, verification reports, design notes, commissioning procedures, as-built documentation and customer handover material.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Telecommunications, Communications Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • 6+ years’ experience in RF, SATCOM, communications systems, electronic hardware or related engineering roles.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to the delivery of engineered products, integrated systems or mission-critical technical solutions.
  • Experience across multiple phases of the engineering lifecycle, including design, integration, test, verification, validation and deployment.
  • Strong understanding of RF and communications system fundamentals, including real-world implementation constraints.
  • Experience working within structured engineering, quality, safety or project delivery processes.
  • Ability to work independently on complex technical tasks while contributing effectively to broader project outcomes.

Technical Skills

  • RF circuit, subsystem or system-level design, including front ends, filtering, amplification, frequency conversion and signal distribution.
  • RF test and measurement using standard laboratory instrumentation such as spectrum analysers, signal generators, power meters and oscilloscopes.
  • System-level debugging, fault finding and root-cause analysis.
  • Understanding of RF performance factors such as gain, noise figure, linearity, phase noise, impedance matching, isolation and interference.
  • Experience with SATCOM, terrestrial communications, microwave systems, telemetry, tracking systems or other complex RF communications systems.
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout review with RF performance considerations.
  • Ability to prepare clear technical documentation, test records and engineering recommendations.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with defence, government, aerospace, maritime, aviation or mission-critical communications environments.
  • Experience with SATCOM ground segment equipment, antennas, modems, converters, HPAs, LNAs, BUCs, tracking systems or RF distribution systems.
  • Experience supporting factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning or field deployment.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering practices, including requirements management, interface control, verification matrices and technical risk management.
  • Experience working with suppliers, subcontractors or manufacturing teams.
  • Familiarity with Australian Defence security, DISP, export control or controlled technical information environments.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance, where required.

Personal Attributes

  • Logical, methodical and practical problem solver.
  • Delivery focused, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for technical outcomes.
  • Proactive, dependable and able to work with limited supervision.
  • Clear communicator who can explain technical issues to engineering, project and customer-facing teams.
  • Comfortable working in hands-on lab, workshop, office and field environments.
  • Safety focused and committed to engineering quality.

Work Environment & Travel

  • Primarily office based in Brookvale, NSW, working closely with engineering and project teams.
  • Hands-on work may include laboratory testing, workshop integration, factory acceptance testing and field support.
  • Flexible work-from-home arrangements may be available where they support productivity and delivery outcomes.

Occasional domestic and international travel may be required to support integration, testing, commissioning, deployment and customer support activities.
