Summary:

The After Hours Manager (Weekends 08:30am to 04:30pm) plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of our clients during non-standard hours. Based in Ashfield, New South Wales, this part-time permanent position is essential for maintaining operational excellence and providing support to our team and residents. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills and a commitment to upholding safety standards in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with residents, families, staff, and external stakeholders in a manner that is respectful, clear, timely and responsive, supporting informed decision-making and trust.
  • Once a month to attend work on a weekday to communicate with management.
  • Ensure residents and their representatives are kept informed of changes, incidents or issues that affect care, safety, or wellbeing, in line with open disclosure principles.
  • Function as the key point of escalation after hours, ensuring concerns, complaints and risks are listened to, acknowledged, documented, and addressed promptly.
  • Provide real-time guidance, coaching, and decision-making support to staff to enable safe, effective, and person-centred care delivery.
  • Support staff wellbeing by facilitating debriefing, reflection and emotional support following incidents, critical events, or challenging situations.
  • Ensure effective, structured handovers that support continuity of care, shared understanding of resident needs, and safe clinical practice.
  • Evaluates resident clinical needs and adjusts staff assignments to ensure clinical safety and resident wellbeing.
  • Ensure clinical decisions are made within scope of practice and supported by accurate assessment, documentation, and professional judgement.
  • Oversee medication management after hours, including administration, storage, incident response, and escalation of medication-related risks.
  • Escalate significant incidents, emerging risks, and systemic issues to senior management in a timely manner, ensuring appropriate oversight and governance.
  • Proactively manages after-hours sicks calls and vacancies; uses internal/pool staff first to maintain continuity of care and minimise reliance on external providers.
  • Provides comprehensive site and resident-specific orientation for all agency staff; monitors their performance throughout the shift to ensure alignment with ABH’s care standards.
  • Comply with WHS obligations and promote a safe physical and psychosocial environment.
  • Adhere to organisational values, Code of Conduct, policies, and procedures.
  • Managing complex and deteriorating clinical presentations, cognitive impairment, or behavioural escalation after hours or on weekends.
  • Making timely, high-risk clinical decisions with limited access to senior clinicians, senior management, or external supports.
  • Balancing immediate clinical demand with governance, escalation, and documentation requirements.
  • Ensuring consistent clinical governance and safe practice across shifts, after-hours, and weekends.
  • Responding to clinical incidents or adverse events that may involved heightened emotional distress or regulatory scrutiny across shifts, after-hours, and weekends.
  • Contribute to accreditation, compliance, and continuous improvement activities.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • AHPRA Registered Nurse with at least three (3) years’ experience in Aged Care or a related discipline
  • Proven experience as a leader or manager in a nursing/healthcare environment.
  • Experience in coordinating the operations of a complex facility (e.g., acute, or mental health).
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effectively under pressure and manage conflict or negotiation.
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills across all levels of an organisation.
  • Contemporary knowledge of clinical issues, accreditation standards, and relevant legislation.
  • Proficiency in health-related IT systems and computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of the Aged Care Regulatory environment
