Description

Help build an institutional-grade investment portfolio that delivers returns and real-world impact.

Most investment roles ask you to maximise financial returns. This one asks you to build something bigger.

Agriculture Victoria Services (AVS) is creating a sophisticated, impact-led investment function focused on backing innovations with the potential to generate measurable economic, environmental and societal outcomes while delivering commercial returns. We’re looking for an experienced investment professional who wants to help shape that journey.

This is an opportunity to help build an institutional-grade investment portfolio, influence strategy, and make investment decisions that accelerate the commercialisation of world-class technologies and innovations.

For the right person, it’s a chance to step up, take ownership and help build something enduring.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Investment, you’ll move beyond executing transactions to helping shape investment strategy, portfolio construction and investment decision-making.

You’ll assess opportunities, challenge assumptions, undertake rigorous due diligence and help determine where capital should be deployed to create the greatest long-term value and impact.

This role would suit someone who already has experience in investing, venture capital, private markets, consulting, corporate finance or a related field and is ready to step into a more strategic position with broader influence. The position is specifically designed as a growth opportunity for an ambitious investment professional.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who thinks like an investor.

Someone who is commercially curious, challenges conventional thinking, and gets energised by identifying opportunities others haven’t yet seen.

You may come from venture capital, private markets, corporate finance, funds management, management consulting or a related investment environment. You’ll likely bring:

  • Experience assessing investments, growth opportunities or emerging technologies
  • Strong financial modelling, valuation and due diligence capability
  • Sound commercial judgement and an ability to challenge investment logic
  • A strategic mindset and interest in portfolio construction
  • The confidence to engage with founders, researchers, investors and senior decision-makers
  • An entrepreneurial approach to solving problems and creating value

Most importantly, you’re motivated by seeing your work translate into tangible outcomes—not just reports or recommendations.

Why this role is different

At AVS, we’re focused on backing opportunities that matter. We invest in innovations that can strengthen industries, improve productivity, support sustainability, create regional opportunities and contribute to Australia’s future food security. Our focus is on finding and backing the technologies with the greatest potential to solve real-world problems for Victorian agriculture, whether those opportunities originate in Victoria, elsewhere in Australia, or globally.  But we do it through the lens of disciplined investment and commercial rigour—not innovation theatre.

You’ll join a small, high-performing team with the freedom to think strategically, challenge ideas and help shape where capital is deployed.

If you’ve ever wanted to combine the analytical discipline of investing with the satisfaction of seeing meaningful outcomes from your work, this role offers a rare opportunity to do both.

About AVS

AVS exists to unlock the unrealised value of Victoria’s agricultural industries. We work at the intersection of research, investment, commercialisation and industry, helping turn promising ideas into scalable solutions that deliver economic, environmental and social value. Through our GROW Strategy, we’re focused on growing high-impact portfolios, accelerating innovation and building sustainable foundations for long-term success.
