The Opportunity:

The YNT Back2School Program is an alternative education program supporting young people in Years 9–12 who are disengaged or at risk of disengaging from mainstream education. The program provides a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment focused on re-engagement, wellbeing, literacy and numeracy development, life skills, and pathways into school, training, or employment.

The Alternative Education Facilitator plays a key leadership role in the delivery of the YNT Back2School Program. This position is responsible for delivering the educational component of the program, ensuring learning is individualised, engaging, and responsive to each young person’s needs.

The role supports the succession and deputising functions of the Program Coordinator, providing day-to-day operational leadership, educational planning, and continuity of program delivery when the coordinator is absent.

This position combines direct program delivery, curriculum planning, case coordination, stakeholder communication, and pathway development to support disengaged young people to reconnect with education, build confidence, and transition toward school, VET, training, or employment outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Educational Leadership

– Lead the daily educational delivery of the Back2School Program

– Work alongside the Back2School Coordinator to develop and implement term plans, weekly schedules, and annual program plans

– Deliver differentiated literacy, numeracy, life skills, and project-based learning activities

– Individualize student work levels based on ability, engagement, and school expectations

– Ensure educational content aligns with student goals and school re-engagement plans

– Support curriculum links to Australian Curriculum capabilities and general capabilities

– Maintain high expectations around learning routines, behavior, and engagement

  • Daily Program Delivery

– Deliver the educational component of the program each school term day

– Lead structured sessions including literacy, numeracy, life skills, and career readiness

– Facilitate hands-on and project learning experiences

– Support excursions, guest facilitators, and specialist sessions

– Model positive relationships and classroom culture

  • Student Case Coordination

– Complete timely and high-quality student case notes

– Follow up with teachers, schools, industry partners, and parents/carers

– Maintain communication around attendance, progress, goals, and concerns

– Contribute to student goal setting, reviews, and transition planning

– Support referrals and pathway connections into VET, employment, and support services

– Track student attendance, engagement, and educational progress

  • Coordinator Succession

– Act as succession support to the Coordinator

– Provide leadership coverage during Coordinator leave or absence

– Support staff with daily delivery expectations and educational practice

– Assist with planning meetings, rostering, and daily operational decisions

– Maintain program continuity across Back2School and partner streams

– Contribute to program improvement, reporting, and stakeholder relationships

– Step into future Coordinator responsibilities as capability develops

  • Cross-Program Support

– Deliver weekly support across PYA Boys/Girls Night where required

– Provide school holiday coverage across PYA and PYC where required

– Support consistency of youth engagement approaches across streams

Qualifications and Experience

  • Current manual NT driver’s license.
  • Current First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003 or higher) and CPR.
  • Cert IV in Training and Assessment, Education Support, Youth Work, Community Services or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience delivering education, alternative education, youth work, or learning support programs for young people
  • Experience planning and delivering differentiated learning activities, including literacy, numeracy, life skills, and project-based learning.
  • Ability to provide leadership, support daily operations, and contribute to program continuity within a team environment.
