Western NSW Community Legal Centre Inc. (WNSWCLC) is seeking a passionate and committed Policy and Law Reform Officer to join our team. This is a vital role driving systemic advocacy and law reform to address the underlying legal and policy issues affecting people experiencing disadvantage across Western New South Wales. You will work collaboratively with solicitors, senior leadership, and community partners to ensure lived experience, evidence, and community voices inform meaningful legal and policy reform.

Western NSW Community Legal Centre (WNSWCLC) is a not-for-profit organisation working to improve access to justice for people facing disadvantage across the region. We provide free legal advice, representation, referrals, and community education to empower and support our communities. The specialist unit, Western Women’s Legal Support (WWLS), delivers trauma-informed, culturally safe support to women and children affected by domestic and family violence.

We are values-driven and committed to justice, respect, and advocacy for systemic change through community engagement and law reform.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As the Policy and Law Reform Officer, you will play a central role in advancing WNSWCLC’s systemic advocacy, policy development, and governance support. Working closely with the Executive Officer, Principal Solicitor, and broader team, your responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying and analysing systemic legal and policy issues using casework data, research, and community engagement
  • Preparing high-quality law reform submissions, policy papers, briefing notes, and consultation responses
  • Contributing to state-wide and national advocacy initiatives in collaboration with sector partners and peak bodies
  • Representing WNSWCLC in law reform forums, working groups, and interagency networks
  • Providing policy advice and briefings to senior management and the Management Committee
  • Supporting data collection, reporting, and evaluation of advocacy and law reform outcomes
  • Building strong relationships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, community groups, and government stakeholders
  • Ensuring culturally safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed approaches underpin all advocacy and governance work.

ABOUT YOU We are looking for a motivated professional who is passionate about access to justice and systemic change. You will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in law, public policy, governance, social sciences, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in policy development, law reform, systemic advocacy, or governance
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills, including experience drafting submissions and reports
  • Sound understanding of public policy processes and law reform frameworks
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including Boards, community organisations, and government bodies
  • A commitment to the values and objectives of community legal centres
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex issues into clear, accessible language
  • A current NSW Driver’s Licence
  • Experience in the legal sector and knowledge of issues affecting regional, rural, and remote communities are highly desirable.

REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

  • Salary Packaging: Take advantage of not-for-profit salary packaging to reduce your tax liability and maximise your take-home pay.
  • Remuneration package: from $51,000 per annum (pro-rated to 21 hours per week) plus superannuation.

The Western Women’s Legal Support (WWLS) is a cornerstone of our services; a specialist domestic violence unit launched in 2015. WWLS provides a holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally appropriate service to women and their children, assisting them in escaping the cycle of abuse through specialist legal help, practical support, and community education. WNSWCLC also engages in community legal education to inform individuals about their legal rights and responsibilities, and participates in law reform activities to address systemic issues affecting our clients. We advise using compassion, understanding, and a non-judgmental approach, ensuring that clients are supported in a manner that acknowledges their personal circumstances and empowers them to make informed decisions about their lives.
