POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Assistant Coach, Sydney Flames Basketball Team

Location: Sydney Olympic Park and/or Auburn Basketball Centre of Excellence

Business: Hoops Capital

Reports To: Renae Garlepp, Head Coach and James Newman, GM Basketball Operations

COMPANY BACKGROUND

Hoops Capital Pty Ltd is a multi-faceted basketball enterprise and owner of the Sydney Flames and Sydney Kings. Hoops Capital is focused on the development of basketball as a community sport, in addition to providing an avenue for youth player development, multi-tiered competitions, and coaching through to an elite level. The organisation’s goal is to capture the interest of all basketball fans, by promoting a sense of community through opportunity to participate in the sport of basketball in many ways.

ROLE PURPOSE

This position is key to the overall success of The Sydney Flames Basketball Team. Central to the success in this role will be the ability to support the Head Coach both on and off the court. The desired outcome is the successful setting of standards and achievement of expectations and results through supporting both players and the Head Coach with effective communication and motivation techniques.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Performance

Assist in the management of all aspects of team performance, including but not limited to analysing player performance.

Team Support

Work closely with the Head Coach and the Head of Medical and Performance to achieve the desired outcomes for overall team fitness, ensuring players are able to work to reaching their full potential.

Team Responsibilities

  • Attendance at all Sydney Flames practice sessions and pre-season training camp
  • Attendance at all Sydney Flames pre-season, regular season, and finals home and away games
  • Work in direction from the Head Coach and any other assistant coaches to develop the team program for the WNBL season
  • Support the Sydney Flames Head Coach in development of individual and team goals, objectives and standards of conduct of the playing group
  • Assist in the welfare and support of the players
  • Maintain regular communications with all coaching staff, support staff, players and management
  • Assist the Head Coach in game preparation for opponent teams, analyse game plans and statistical data of opponents, including video and personnel analysis
  • Organise and conduct individual player sessions as required by the Head Coach
  • Evaluate team and individual game performance as required by the Head Coach
  • Attend all team official functions as required
  • Assist the Head Coach in the end of season evaluation of the team and individual players
  • Assist in constructing individual programs for player development to improve specific skills identified in consultation with the Head Coach and players
  • Assist in the coaching and delivery of Sydney Flames and Sydney Kings academy, camps, clinics and community programs as agreed from time to time
  • Assist and collaborate with the Head Coach and GM Basketball Operations in the construction of the team roster and scouting and evaluation of potential players
  • Promotion of the club through media, community and corporate appearances
  • Other such services required to be performed as assigned by the Head Coach or GM Basketball Operations or their equivalent

FUTURE FLAMES AND HOOPS CAPITAL ACADEMY

  • Contribute to the planning, ideation and delivery of the Future Flames program, including the development of the basketball program
  • Liaise with the Corporate Team regarding the connection between Future Flames and our sponsors, ensuring the Future Flames Program is in line with and in support of the Hoops Capital Brand Architecture
  • Contribute to the cultivation of a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Liaise with Kings and Flames Team management to ensure access to players for the Future Flames and Academy programs
  • Build capability and manage talent within the Community team to support growth and bench strength for the future

OFF SEASON

This is a full time position where it is expected that services to the Company are available for a full 12 months of the year. During the off season, and where time permits during the season, it is expected that the Assistant Coach will contribute approximately 15 hours per week to assist the Sydney Flames with the development of the Future Flames program.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years experience coaching at an elite level
  • Demonstrated track record of success in assistant coaching basketball roles to achieve ultimate performance goals
  • Recognised communication skills capable of inspiring and motivating players to succeed
