Summary:
The Zookeeper is responsible for the care, feeding, and overall well-being of animals in the zoo. They ensure the animals’ habitats are clean, safe, and stimulating, while also educating visitors about the animals and their conservation efforts. This role requires a strong passion for animal welfare and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
Responsibilities:
- Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, grooming, and monitoring their health.
- Maintain clean and safe animal habitats, ensuring they meet regulatory standards.
- Develop and implement enrichment programs to promote the physical and mental well-being of animals.
- Monitor animal behavior and promptly report any signs of illness or distress to the veterinary team.
- Educate visitors about the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts through presentations and interactive experiences.
- Assist with the capture, restraint, and transportation of animals when necessary.
- Collaborate with other zoo staff to develop and implement animal management plans.
- Participate in training programs to stay updated on animal care techniques and industry best practices.
- Conduct research and contribute to conservation initiatives to support the zoo’s mission.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in zoology or related field preferred.
- Proven experience working with animals, preferably in a zoo or wildlife rehabilitation center.
- Knowledge of animal behavior, nutrition, and health care.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with visitors and collaborate with team members.
- Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to handle potentially dangerous animals with caution and follow safety protocols.
- Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
