Description

We’re Hiring – Wildlife Veterinarians!

There are careers, and then there are callings. At RSPCA Queensland’s Wildlife Hospital, we care for animals at their most vulnerable – the orphaned joey, the injured native bird, the displaced reptile, the silent casualties of urban expansion and environmental change.

Our wildlife veterinarians are the steady hands and clear minds behind every stabilisation, every surgery, every carefully considered welfare decision. This work is about restoration, giving native animals the best possible chance to heal, recover and return to the wild where they belong.

This work is demanding and deeply meaningful. In return, it offers something few careers can which is the privilege of contributing to conservation and supporting Queensland’s wildlife and ecosystems every single day.

About The Role

This is a hands-on clinical position within one of Queensland’s busiest wildlife hospitals. As a Wildlife Veterinarian, you will provide medical and surgical care to native wildlife, as well as pet birds and reptiles admitted to the hospital.

You will manage a varied caseload spanning trauma, medical and surgical presentations, working collaboratively with veterinary nurses, wildlife assistants, rescue teams, inspectors and external rehabilitators. The role includes maintaining high clinical standards, accurate medical records and contributing to student and graduate development within the hospital.

The environment is fast-moving and purpose-driven. Decisions are often time-sensitive, case complexity can vary significantly and patient welfare remains central to every action. This role contributes directly to achieving strong rehabilitation outcomes and supporting the hospital’s progression towards the highest standard of care.

What We’re Looking For

You are an experienced veterinarian with strong clinical judgement and confidence managing diverse and complex cases. You remain calm under pressure and approach decisions with a clear welfare-based framework.

You communicate professionally, work collaboratively and take ownership of your caseload. You are comfortable supporting students or junior team members and contribute positively to a high-performing team environment.

Above all, you are committed to maintaining high clinical standards within a purpose-driven wildlife hospital setting.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Provide high-quality medical and surgical care to native wildlife patients.
  • Deliver veterinary care to pet birds and reptiles admitted to the hospital.
  • Maintain clear, accurate and thorough medical records.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams (Rescue, Inspectorate) and external stakeholders including wildlife rehabilitators and members of the public.
  • Contribute to the training and mentoring of veterinary students and new graduates.
  • Support the training of Animal Rescue Officers and assist with S4 drug audits in line with organisational accreditation requirements.
  • Uphold strong welfare outcomes for every patient in care.
  • Model and uphold RSPCA Queensland’s values within the wildlife veterinary team.
  • Participate in approved research projects as directed by the Head Wildlife Veterinarian.
  • Actively contribute to wildlife veterinary and general staff meetings.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

  • 3-5+ years’ experience as a veterinarian (wildlife or clinical setting).
  • Veterinary degree registrable in Queensland.
  • Strong medical and surgical capability; wildlife, avian or reptile experience highly regarded.
  • Confident clinical judgement with the ability to make sound welfare-based decisions under pressure.
  • Clear, professional communication across multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
  • Resilience and emotional maturity to manage complex cases and humane euthanasia decisions.
  • Collaborative approach with the ability to mentor and support others.
  • High attention to detail and strong clinical record-keeping standards.
