About the role:

The Agricultural Technician will report to the Farm Manager and is responsible for researching, developing, and implementing scientific farming practices to improve crop productivity, plant health, soil quality, sustainability, and operational efficiency within horticultural production systems. The role supports innovation and continuous improvement through scientific analysis, field trials, data interpretation, and advisory support to farm management and production teams.

This position contributes to achieving high-quality horticultural outputs while ensuring compliance with environmental, biosecurity, workplace safety, and industry standards.

Key operational accountabilities include:

Research and Development

  • Conduct scientific research and field investigations relating to crop production, soil management, irrigation, pest control, and plant nutrition.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate field trials to improve crop yield, quality, and sustainability.
  • Analyse research data and prepare technical reports, recommendations, and presentations for management.
  • Monitor emerging agricultural technologies and recommend suitable innovations for adoption.

Crop and Soil Management

  • Assess soil composition, fertility, and moisture levels to develop effective soil management programs.
  • Recommend fertiliser, irrigation, and crop nutrition strategies based on scientific analysis.
  • Monitor crop growth, plant health, and environmental conditions to optimise productivity.
  • Develop integrated pest and disease management strategies.

Technical Advisory Support

  • Provide scientific and technical advice to farm managers and operational staff.
  • Assist with production planning and implementation of best-practice horticultural techniques.
  • Support quality assurance and compliance with industry standards and government regulations.
  • Collaborate with agronomists, production teams, researchers, and external stakeholders.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Collect and interpret agricultural and environmental data using scientific methods.
  • Maintain accurate research records, trial documentation, and compliance reports.
  • Prepare scientific findings and operational recommendations for management review.

To be successful in the role you will possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Agricultural Science/Horticulture/Agronomy/Plant Science/Soil Science or a closely related field is essential.
  • Experience in protected cropping or commercial horticulture.
  • Experience conducting field trials and scientific research.
  • Familiarity with precision agriculture technologies and sustainability practices.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in agricultural or horticultural production systems.
  • Knowledge of crop production, irrigation systems, soil management, and plant nutrition.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of horticultural production systems and agricultural science principles.
  • Ability to conduct scientific research and interpret technical data.
  • Strong communication and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Sound organisational and project management abilities.
  • Competency in agricultural data management and research tools.
  • Current driver licence.
