Description

WHO ARE WE?

The Rev. Bill Crews Foundation (‘BCF’) is one of Sydney’s most trusted frontline charities and has been supporting the community for nearly 40 years. Our mission is to address homelessness and hardship by providing essential services including food, social welfare, healthcare, education and community programs.

For over 20 years, our Literacy Program has been helping primary school children across NSW and the Northern Territory who have fallen behind in reading. By providing targeted, structured literacy support, we help students build confidence, re-engage in learning, and reach their full potential.

THE ROLE

The Literacy Coordinator plays a key leadership role in ensuring the successful delivery of the Literacy Program across multiple schools. This position blends program oversight, mentoring and educational leadership with the opportunity to step into the classroom when needed to support learning continuity.

This is a dynamic role perfect for an educator who loves teaching but also thrives in guiding others and shaping high-quality programs. You’ll work closely with school partners, support a team of Literacy Instructors and contribute to meaningful outcomes for children who need it most.

This role is available full-time, with some flexibility for the right candidate. You’ll join a committed, supportive team where your expertise directly influences student learning and long-term academic growth.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As our Literacy Coordinator, you will:

  • Provide leadership, guidance and mentoring to Literacy Instructors across multiple school sites.
  • Step into the classroom to deliver literacy sessions (Years 2–6) when covering Instructor absences or supporting program needs.
  • Coordinate and oversee student testing, program data, and progress reporting.
  • Work closely with principals, teachers and families to maintain strong partnerships and shared goals for each child.
  • Organise termly literacy graduations, parent information sessions and program resources.
  • Ensure program consistency, quality standards and best-practice instructional approaches are upheld.
  • Oversee Chaplain and Student Wellbeing Program.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

You are an enthusiastic educator who is passionate about literacy, student growth and supporting other teachers to succeed. You bring strong communication skills, a structured approach to teaching and the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with schools and communities.

You’ll also bring:

  • A Bachelor of Education (Primary) or equivalent qualification.
  • Solid experience in literacy instruction, ideally using structured or phonics-based approaches.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching or supervising staff.
  • Excellent organisational skills and confidence working across multiple school sites.
  • Strong rapport-building skills with students, teachers and families.
  • A current Working With Children Check, Police Check, First Aid Certificate and driver’s licence.

OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS

If your resume is shortlisted, the next steps may include:

  • A phone screen
  • An interview
  • A practical component where you meet the team and observe/engage with aspects of the Literacy Program

We recognise that BCF is a unique organisation, and these steps ensure you feel informed, supported and confident in understanding the role and its impact.

WHY JOIN US?

At BCF, you’ll be part of a mission-driven, supportive team that believes in education as a pathway to empowerment.

We offer:

  • Ongoing professional development in evidence-based literacy instruction
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for wellbeing support
  • Not-for-Profit Salary Packaging benefits (up to $15,900 tax-free!)
  • Access to our Health and Wellbeing Program (WHEREFIT)
  • A collaborative culture where your leadership supports life-changing outcomes for children
