The opportunity:

We are seeking experienced and motivated Electrical Commissioning Technicians to join our commissioning team on a major resource project just outside Newman in WA. This is a great opportunity to be part of a high-performing team delivering critical infrastructure in the heart of the Pilbara, one of Australia’s most significant and dynamic resource regions. The role offers exposure to industry-leading standards, modern test equipment, and the chance to contribute to a project that will play a key role in supporting ongoing operations in the mining sector.

As an Electrical Commissioning Technician, you will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Isolation & energisation – plan, apply and verify electrical isolations, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and test-for-dead procedures in accordance with WAIO electrical safety standards, AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3007 and site Safe Work Procedures.
  • Permit to Work – operate as an authorised Permit Holder / Isolation Officer (as certified); author and execute electrical permits, switching instructions and risk assessments (JSEAs, Take 5s, SLAMs).
  • Live Testing – comply with the WAIO Live Work Standard; SPR-IHS-SAF-060_17 Safe Electrical Work on Low Voltage Electrical Installations Management Plan
  • System walk-downs – participate in construction-to-commissioning handover walk-downs, punch-listing defects and verifying installation against P&IDs, single-line diagrams, loop drawings, cable schedules and termination drawings.
  • Pre-energisation testing – perform and document insulation resistance (megger), continuity, polarity, earth loop impedance, RCD, phase rotation etc.
  • Energisation – execute energisation of ELV & LV in accordance with approved Notice of Energisation (NoE)
  • Functional testing – conduct point-to-point loop checks, motor bumps and runs, direction checks, interlock proving, E-stop and trip testing, VSD commissioning (including parameter setting and load testing), soft starter commissioning and drive tuning on conveyor, crusher, stacker and ancillary drives.
  • Protection & earthing – verify protection grading, earth fault limitation, neutral earthing resistors, earthing and bonding integrity.
  • Control system integration – support SCADA, PLC and network (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, fibre) commissioning alongside the C&I team; assist with I/O checks and signal validation.
  • Documentation – generate and sign off ITRs Stage 2 3 & 4, commissioning test packs, Red-line markups, NCRs and punch lists in the project’s commissioning management system (e.g., Hexagon Smart Completions).
  • Handover – support Care, Custody & Control (CCC) transfer from SCJV to BHP operations, including operator familiarisation, as-built updates and defect close-out.

 Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Australian working rights
  • Current Australian Drivers Licence (manual)
  • Current WA Electrical Licence
  • Current CPR / LVR with First Aid
  • Construction Card (White/Blue)
  • Working at Heights, Confined Space Entry, EWP 11mtr plus
  • Minimum of 3 years’ proven experience

(Highly desirable)

  • Certificate III in Instrumentation &Control
  • Certificate IV in Electrical – Instrumentation, or equivalent dual-trade experience.
  • HV switching authorisation at 11 kV / 22 kV / 33 kV.
