This role bridges direct service delivery and program development bringing a higher level of clinical reasoning, risk assessment capability, and sector knowledge in both individual casework and broader team functioning. The Senior Practitioner models culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strengths-based practice and plays a key role in supporting less experienced staff to build confidence and capability in family wellbeing service delivery. A strong commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, community-controlled service delivery, and continuous improvement is essential to this role.

Responsibilities:

– Advanced ability to build and maintain culturally safe, therapeutic relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families presenting with complex and intersecting needs

– Demonstrated capacity to conduct comprehensive family needs assessments, complex risk assessments, and safety planning across a range of family wellbeing contexts

 – Sound knowledge of child and family wellbeing frameworks, relevant Queensland legislation, and evidence-informed practice models, with the ability to translate these into practical casework guidance for colleagues

– Ability to provide informal practice leadership, peer consultation, and mentoring to less experienced staff, supporting reflective and evidence-informed practice across the team

– Experience in designing and facilitating group programs, workshops, or community education activities relevant to family wellbeing

– Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to exercise sound professional judgement in complex or high-risk case scenarios

– Highly developed organisational skills, with the ability to manage a complex caseload alongside team support responsibilities and competing priorities

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce high quality case documentation, contribute to reports, and communicate effectively with families, colleagues, and external stakeholders

– Capacity to work with a high degree of autonomy while operating collaboratively within a team and under the direction of program management

– Demonstrated commitment to professional development, reflective practice, and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement

– Familiarity with relevant legislation, including the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 and Child Protection Act 1999.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Psychology, Human Services or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in family services or a related area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child protection legislation and family support frameworks.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with families.
  • Proficient in case management and report writing.
