Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic Mental Health Nurse to join our team. The successful candidate will provide specialised nursing care to individuals experiencing mental health issues, focusing on assessment, treatment, and support. The Mental Health Nurse will work collaboratively with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive and person-centred mental health care.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, including evaluating patients’ psychological, emotional, and behavioural needs.
  • Develop and implement individualised care plans, including therapeutic interventions, medication management, and crisis intervention, tailored to patients’ needs.
  • Provide direct nursing care and support, including administering medications, monitoring patients’ responses to treatments, and managing psychiatric symptoms.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists, to coordinate and integrate care.
  • Educate patients and their families on mental health conditions, treatment options, coping strategies, and support resources.
  • Monitor and document patients’ progress, changes in condition, and responses to interventions, ensuring accurate and timely records.
  • Provide emotional support and counselling to patients, helping them navigate their mental health challenges and promoting their recovery and well-being.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and organisational policies related to mental health care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, contributing to the development and implementation of best practices in mental health nursing.
  • Provide support and guidance to junior staff and students as needed, fostering a collaborative and educational environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent; postgraduate qualifications in mental health nursing preferred.
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Proven experience in mental health nursing, including working with individuals experiencing a range of mental health conditions.
  • Strong knowledge of mental health assessment techniques, therapeutic interventions, and crisis management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload in a dynamic and sometimes challenging environment.
