What you’ll do
As a Software Engineer at Open, you’ll play a meaningful role in building and evolving the technology that powers our insurance platform. Working closely with Product, Design, and Data in a cross-functional squad, you’ll turn real customer and business problems into well-crafted software.
In this role, you will:
- Develop and maintain web applications using Python and the Django framework.
- Write readable, efficient, and testable code, and implement automated tests to ensure quality and reliability.
- Collaborate across Product, Design, and Data to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Participate in design and architecture discussions, contributing ideas and asking good questions.
- Take part in code reviews and learn from the engineers around you.
- Take ownership of your work end-to-end, from writing the code to understanding how it behaves in production.
- Stay close to the latest trends and technologies in web development and bring relevant insights back to the team.
What you’ll bring
Required
- Proven commercial experience as a Python Django developer, with a track record of building and shipping production applications
- Proficiency in SOLID principles, Python, and the Django framework
- Practitioner of test-driven development (TDD) and proven experience crafting good unit tests
- Proven experience with PostgreSQL and Django ORM
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools
- Experience with agile development methodologies
- Sound problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a team
Preferred
- Familiarity with front-end technologies, Angular is a plus
- Familiarity with AI coding assistants and agents
- Experience with cloud-based development in AWS, Azure, or GCP
Role location
Where you’ll work
This role is based in Sydney, Australia. We work in a hybrid model, with teams in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. We’ve found this rhythm genuinely supports collaboration and the kind of fast, high-trust culture we’ve built. You’ll have flexibility on the other days to work in a way that suits you.
