The Retail Assistant, based in Gosford at The University of Newcastle’s Central Coast Campus, provides knowledgeable advice and assistance to the Retail Officer, Merchandise Coordinator, Commercial Manager, General Manager, students, staff and other University of Newcastle customers on merchandise and uniforms sourced and sold by NUServices. This role supports the retail merchandise operations by managing inventory, processing orders, maintaining stock, and ensuring effective customer relationships. This role contributes to the overall presentation and functionality of the merchandise and uniform business, including the use of key retail systems such as SwiftPos, Shopify, and Technology One.
Responsibilities:
- Engage and communicate with customers including key university stakeholders to manage orders, deliveries, provide excellent counter service, and build strong relationships through strong service delivery.
- Provide timely support and issue resolutions to staff, customers, and stakeholders; escalate unresolved issues to the Retail Officer.
- Monitor and support outlet presentation, cleanliness, and visual appeal.
- Stock control, including inventory receipt and stock deliveries, including tagging, POS entry, and storage, and the register of all stock damaged or written off.
- Accurately process and manage merchandise orders inventory using SwiftPos.
- Coordinate and participate in stocktakes.
- Participate in event pop-up merchandise stores, as required.
- Implement promotional campaigns and prepare in-store signage.
- Travel to other University campuses may be required.
Skills & Experience:
- Experience in retail or merchandise operations.
- Knowledge and understanding of university placement unform requirements.
- Strong organisational and inventory management skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proven ability to manage customer relationships.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in order processing.
- Proficient computer skills (MS Office, especially Excel) and familiarity with inventory systems such as SwiftPos.
- Relevant qualifications, or equivalent work-related experience, education, or training.
- Demonstrated customer service skills in call centre or face-to-face settings, including conflict resolution.
- Professional public presentation and ability to create a safe, welcoming environment.
- Experience providing administrative support in complex organisations, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge of workplace policies and procedures including work health and safety, equity, diversity, and respectful workplace culture.
- Recent Police/Criminal Check and Working with Children Check.
This role operates across NUservices retail shops, storerooms, offices, and customer-facing areas. It may involve lifting stock, flexible hours including weekends, and attendance at other University campuses and pop-up merchandise events.
