About NAAFLS
NAAFLS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and the only victim‑based Family Violence Prevention Legal Service operating in remote communities across the Top End of the Northern Territory. With offices in Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy, we service over 40 remote communities, delivering culturally responsive legal representation in:

Our unique holistic service model brings lawyers together with Aboriginal Client Support Officers and Case Workers—ensuring our clients are supported not just legally, but culturally and safely.
About the Role
Based in Katherine, the Managing Solicitor is a senior leadership position reporting to the Principal Legal Officer and forming part of the NAAFLS Leadership Team.
You will:
- Lead, supervise and mentor a dedicated legal team
- Deliver high‑quality legal services in complex family violence‑related matters
- Support professional development, compliance and legal practice management
- Travel regularly to remote communities to build trust and improve access to justice
- Contribute to community legal education and law reform initiatives
This role is ideal for an experienced solicitor who is ready to lead from the front, support staff growth, and work in close partnership with Aboriginal communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor solicitors, paralegals and volunteers
- Ensure culturally safe, ethical and high‑quality legal service delivery
- Oversee legal practice management and compliance
- Promote a positive, accountable workplace culture
- Deliver and support community legal education programs
- Engage in remote community outreach and travel
- Contribute to strategic initiatives, reporting and continuous improvement
About You
You are an experienced and values‑driven solicitor with strong expertise in family law, child protection and domestic and family violence, who can lead and mentor a legal team to deliver high‑quality, culturally safe and trauma‑informed legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across Katherine and remote communities.
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Eligible for an unrestricted NT practising certificate
- Minimum 3 years post‑admission experience in Family Law, Child Protection and/or Domestic Violence
- Proven leadership and team supervision experience
- Strong cultural capability and commitment to trauma‑informed practice
- Excellent communication, mentoring and relationship‑building skills
- Willingness to travel to remote communities
- WWCC, National Police Check and NT Driver’s Licence
Desirable
- Experience in a Community Legal Centre or Aboriginal Legal Service
- Strong understanding of legal and cultural issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the NT
