Apprentice / Trainee

Reports To

Workplace Supervisor / Host Employer Supervisor / Field Officer / Training Coordinator

Location

As directed, including worksites, host employer sites, training facilities and other approved work locations.

Position Purpose

The Apprentice / Trainee is employed to develop practical workplace skills, industry knowledge and formal qualifications through a structured training arrangement. The role supports the delivery of day-to-day operational tasks while participating in supervised on-the-job training and formal study with a Registered Training Organisation.

The position is designed to build capability, confidence, work readiness and trade or vocational competence over the term of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

Key Responsibilities

Workplace Duties

The Apprentice / Trainee will:

  • Perform duties relevant to their apprenticeship or traineeship under appropriate supervision.
  • Follow lawful and reasonable directions from supervisors, managers, field officers and trainers.
  • Assist with daily work activities, including preparation, task completion, clean-up and reporting.
  • Use tools, equipment, materials and resources safely and appropriately.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised work area.
  • Work cooperatively with team members, supervisors, clients and other stakeholders.
  • Attend work on time, ready and fit for duty.
  • Take responsibility for learning, skill development and workplace conduct.

Training and Development

The Apprentice / Trainee will:

  • Participate in all required formal training and assessment activities.
  • Attend scheduled training days, workshops, classes or online learning sessions.
  • Complete assigned coursework, logbooks, workplace evidence and assessments within required timeframes.
  • Apply learning from formal training to practical workplace tasks.
  • Seek feedback and support where required.
  • Work progressively towards successful completion of the relevant qualification.

Work Health and Safety

The Apprentice / Trainee will:

  • Comply with all workplace health and safety policies, procedures and instructions.
  • Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment.
  • Report hazards, incidents, injuries, near misses and unsafe practices immediately.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, site inductions, risk assessments and safety briefings.
  • Follow Safe Work Method Statements, Job Safety and Environmental Analyses, standard operating procedures and site rules.
  • Only undertake tasks for which they have been instructed, trained and authorised.

Conduct and Professional Standards

The Apprentice / Trainee will:

  • Demonstrate respectful, reliable and professional behaviour.
  • Represent the employer and host employer appropriately at all times.
  • Communicate honestly and promptly about attendance, performance, safety or training issues.
  • Maintain confidentiality where required.
  • Treat colleagues, clients, community members and stakeholders with courtesy and respect.
  • Show initiative, accountability and willingness to learn.
  • Comply with all workplace policies, procedures and codes of conduct.

Key Relationships

The Apprentice / Trainee will work with:

  • Direct supervisors and team leaders.
  • Host employer representatives.
  • Field officers, training coordinators or employment services staff.
  • Registered Training Organisation trainers and assessors.
  • Clients, contractors, suppliers and community stakeholders, where relevant.
  • Other apprentices, trainees and team members.

Essential Requirements

  • Eligibility to undertake the relevant apprenticeship or traineeship.
  • Commitment to completing the full training contract.
  • Willingness to attend work and formal training as required.

  • Ability to follow reasonable directions and workplace procedures.
  • Current driver licence or willingness to obtain one, where required for the role.
  • Working with Children Check, National Police Check, White Card or other role-specific checks, where required.
  • Right to work in Australia.

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous work experience, volunteering or pre-apprenticeship training.
  • Interest in the relevant industry or trade area.
  • Basic experience using tools, equipment, technology or machinery relevant to the role.
  • First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
  • Demonstrated connection to community, culture or local employment pathways, where relevant.

Success in the role will be assessed by:

  • Consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrated improvement in workplace skills and confidence.
  • Compliance with safety requirements and workplace procedures.
  • Successful completion of probationary and performance review milestones.
  • Completion of the apprenticeship or traineeship qualification.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

Depending on the role, the Apprentice / Trainee may be required to:

  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Undertake manual handling and physically active duties.
  • Stand, walk, bend, lift, carry or use tools and equipment for extended periods.
  • Travel to different worksites or host employer locations.
  • Work around plant, machinery, vehicles, chemicals or environmental hazards under supervision.
  • Wear PPE and follow site-specific safety controls.
  • Work standard business hours, early starts, rostered hours or occasional overtime where lawful and reasonable.
