The Role

This role is available in either ACT or VIC.

  • The Systems Engineer will:
  • Perform critical and complex engineering activities and provide advice in the field of software systems engineering for the project.
  • Perform the systems engineering role in a complex and diverse technological environment (i.e. systems of systems, disparate networking environments, radio systems and electro-mechanical environments).
  • Develop engineering plans and designs that are produced with, and consumed by, other engineering specialists.
  • Work with systems architects and engineering management in the development of engineering artefacts for a Beyond-Line-Of-Sight Friendly Force Tracking (BLOS FFT) capability (encompassing personal devices and software/data integration of location information into centralised command and control eco-systems).
  • Support the Engineering Manager in development of engineering work packages that meet the needs of the scope of work and may include:

– Contribution to artefacts as part of capability definition documentation and management plans, processes and procedures.

– Contribution to system architecture and systems integration specifications, plans, procedures, reports and other technical material.

  • Support wider engineering, project management and commercial activities where systems engineering expertise is required.
  • Monitor and ensure that safety aspects of Defence materiel systems are considered and incorporated into hardware and software engineering activities.
  • Identify and resolve system engineering related technical issues and constraints and advise engineering and project management functions on appropriate courses of action.
  • Exercise any assigned engineering authorities and technical regulatory delegations.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and maintain effective relationships and negotiate to influence stakeholders and subject matter experts to deliver agreed project outcomes.
  • Assess, interpret and comply with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
  • Be accountable for accurate completion of work within defined timeframes and quality requirements within a matrixed, integrated workforce.

The position reports to the Engineering Manager and may be required to provide subject matter support to project workstreams and the Project Director.

About You

The Systems Engineer requires a highly organised and motivated individual who works effectively in a complex environment, can think critically, demonstrates strong problem-solving capability, and can manage competing priorities.

This role requires demonstrated experience in:

  • Systems engineering, including planning, specification and design across multiple phases of a program.
  • Development and integration of personal location devices and associated data within centralised command and control ecosystems.
  • Systems engineering within a complex acquisition or capability delivery environment.
  • DevSecOps and the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Analysis, design, review and delivery of high-quality engineering documentation to support approvals and capability delivery.
  • Performing complex technical work activities with initiative, creativity and limited guidance.
  • Managing technical and integration risks.
  • Working in complex and challenging environments.
  • Operating within complex stakeholder environments.
  • Communications-related software and associated enabling services and infrastructure.
  • Applying testing and evaluation techniques across the system development lifecycle.
  • Highly effective communication skills, including advanced technical writing.
  • Maintaining currency of skills, awareness of industry developments and continuous improvement practices.
  • Analysing, planning, executing and evaluating work to time, cost and quality constraints, including risk assessment

Essential experience and / or qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics, Computer Systems, Communications, Networking or similar), or an equivalent qualification aligned to internationally recognised engineering standards (e.g. Washington Accord).
  • More than 8 years’ engineering experience, including at least 5 years in systems engineering.
  • Experience in location tracking and command and control capabilities (or similar), including integration of devices and data into centralised systems.
  • A current security clearance (minimum NV1).
  • Comprehensive understanding of complex engineering systems.
  • Understanding of structured capability delivery and acquisition frameworks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Highly Desirable Experience and / or Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a Defence CASG engineering and/or project environment.
  • Postgraduate qualifications or demonstrated equivalent experience in software engineering.
  • Experience in pre-Acquisition project activities including design, development and tender evaluations.
  • Experience in the design, development and support of operational military communications and ICT systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in ICT, engineering, cyber-security and integrated logistic support (ILS) processes and procedures in accordance with industry and Defence policy, standards and recognised best practices including test planning, conduct and automation.
  • Experience with systems safety and cyber security.
  • Experience with Australian Defence Force Land Domain tactical communications and ICT technologies.
  • A sound understanding of DevSecOps and the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Experience with the MS Azure environment.
  • Experience with Linux based operating systems
