Description

We are seeking an HSEQ Specialist to support our green hydrogen and renewable energy project portfolio

New Zealand-based + Australia travel

At Hiringa Energy, we’re not just imagining a low‑emissions future — we’re building it. From world‑class hydrogen production and infrastructure to industrial decarbonisation and renewable energy projects across New Zealand and Australia, we’re tackling some of the hardest‑to‑abate sectors with innovation, courage, and purpose.

We are expanding and are looking for an experienced HSEQ Specialist who brings energy, curiosity, and practical capability to help us keep our people, partners, and communities safe.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic, technical environments, enjoys working with diverse teams, and is passionate about enabling safe, sustainable project and operational outcomes.

This role is required to be regularly on site at our various projects and operations across NZ and AU.

As an HSEQ Specialist, you’ll be involved in:

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring HSEQ policies, procedures and safety frameworks
  • Conducting site inspections, HSE audits and compliance monitoring
  • Leading or participating in HAZOPs, safety-in-design reviews and other risk assessments
  • Supporting incident investigations, reporting and corrective action closure
  • Preparing HSEQ reporting, dashboards and performance analysis
  • Maintaining emergency response plans and coordinating drills
  • Delivering inductions, toolbox talks and HSEQ training
  • Monitoring legislative changes and ensuring compliance with standards and regulations
  • Supporting environmental monitoring including emissions, waste, water and energy
  • Contributing to health, wellbeing and return‑to‑work initiatives
  • Collaborating with contractors, regulators and internal teams to strengthen HSEQ outcomes

Experience & Background

We’re open to a range of experience levels, but you will ideally bring:

  • 5+ years’ experience in a dedicated HSEQ role, ideally in renewables, hydrogen, industrial or high-risk sectors where you have been involved in the operational side of the business
  • Hands-on experience with HSE audits, incident investigations and risk workshops (e.g., HAZOP)
  • Strong working knowledge of New Zealand HSEQ legislation, regulations and industry standards
  • Experience working across project environments — construction and operations
  • Proven ability to engage with contractors, site teams and corporate stakeholders
  • Tertiary qualifications in Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or similar (preferred)
  • Strong organisational, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with hydrogen or gas industry regulatory frameworks (advantageous)
  • Ability to work independently across multiple sites and stakeholders.

Core Competencies We Value

  • Strong decision-making capability
  • Stakeholder relationship management
  • Ability to problem solve in complex, dynamic environments
  • High personal accountability and integrity
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills
  • Adaptability and comfort working with ambiguity
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to lift team culture
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and relationship‑building skills.

Hiringa is a small, agile and values‑driven business where you will have:

  • Real influence over HSEQ culture and system development
  • Exposure to world‑class green hydrogen projects in NZ and Australia
  • A collaborative, supportive and high‑trust culture
